Yesterday I heard a thud

You may or may not know that is common for cardinals, especially young ones, to get a bit confused. They will see their reflection in a window or mirror, and fly right into it, to fight or to flirt.
So, I heard this thud, and over to the side of my windows I caught a little flutter out of the corner of my eye. I ignored it.
Princess was outside, though. She retrieved the victim, who immediately put up a loud screech. Of course I intervened. Loosened the cat from the female cardinal, and put the cat indoors.
The cardinal just sat on the lawn, in a daze. No blood. Some ruffled feathers, but looking okay. Blinking, as if to ask "What hit me?"
Like any good bird mother, I knelt down, and offered an extended index finger. She climbed aboard. I took her across the yard and nestled her in some low growing evergreens. She sat a while, out of sight, unless you knew precisely where to look.
I was relieved on one of my later trips out to check on her she got all flustered and fluttered deeper into the shrubs to recover.
There have been many cardinals at the feeding stations again today. I certainly hope she was one of them.

Poor little thing. Good thing you rescued the little one from Princess. I hope the little one will be ok.

Yes. I think she was fine after a while, just very dazed.

I can imagine. I try to get my Sophie to look at herself but she wants nothing to do with it.

I had a very persistent young male cardinal at my other house.

@GardenGerty I've just wrapped an old tea-towel round the rearview mirror of my car as they keep attacking themselves and covering the area with poo.

It has been a while since we had a bird fly into one of our windows. My wife will occasionally hit a cardinal or a dove that is too slow avoiding the car. She always feels awful about it. I tell her she did the bird world a favor by removing birds not smart enough to stay out of the highway.

I heard a story about a large bird possibly a red tailed hawk getting caught in the grate of a truck and surviving and getting freed by the owner's husband. Some times it is hard to share the road.

I am guessing she did as I saw her fluttering around in her safe spot later in the day.

Yes. It was really satisfying that she trusted me enough to step up on my finger and let me take her to safety. And put the cat inside.

@GardenGerty Oh, yeah. The cat! lol. Btw, I don’t know how that happened. Glad you mentioned it to Andria.

I have been scared by one of those flying window bombs. I swear I was washing dishes and one trying to fly in the kitchen window, the window was closed.. Scary.
I hope the bird made it.

Yes, that is pretty loud.It does scare you. Makes you wonder what it is that they want inside.

Yes, nature and man sometimes have a hard time sharing the space.

We have birds flying into our front window almost daily. Little chickadees and even pigeons....so far....only one fatality.

I have been places where they have silhouettes of raptors that they put on large windows to scare the other birds away. I have also heard of putting holographic type ribbons to repel them. What I have had happen I should probably post as a post. I mean I have had some go for windows but also other things.

The bird was smart enough to scream in protest.

Yes, they are. Sometimes they just see their reflections, but other times it is things inside the house that attract them.
