Wire Wrap It?

United States
December 29, 2018 10:08am CST
This is one of two shells that I picked up from the beach last weekend. I saw it and I knew that I wanted to make something out of it. I thought about punching a hole in it but I don't think that would work. Then it came to me that I could wrap it in jewelry wire, make an eyelet sized hole in the wire and loop a chain through it. What do you guys think? Would you make a piece of jewelry out of this or leave it be?

No, but I do know someone who should still have equipment for it. I'm not so sure though. Either way, I think I'll go with the wire wrapping method anyway. Now it's just a matter of getting the wire.

@Courage7 I only wish I could have found more. There's also another opportunity to find more of course.

@thislittlepennyearns My ear piercings have grown in. I have thought of getting them pierced again though.

I have three pieces. One is a tiny bottle with raw rubies in it, that was handmade by someone. One is an amethyst? I forget whichever stone is purplish. That was handmade as well, I got that at a Honeybee festival. I got a best friend bracelet from the same place. I don't wear jewelry very often and I prefer to buy my own.

You certainly could. I think I would be tempted to put a coat of shellac on it too.

@ScribbledAdNauseum This is probably the time to do when it is not picked over by tourists.

That isn't a bad idea either. It honestly makes me want to go back to the beach and find more shells.

@snowy22315 Very true. When we went the Saturday before Christmas, it was only us and the locals. Of the locals, it was only about three or four different people. One who was just going home with his cup of coffee in hand.

Wrapping is surely what I would do, it could break trying to punch a hole.

That is my biggest fear, that it would break.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It's not easy to punch a hole in a shell.

I think it will be beautiful. I have a drill so I would put the hole through the shell... but your idea of the wire will work and make it look pretty.

I don't have a drill but I know someone who probably still has one.. He used to make jewelry all the time. I only wish I had found more shells that I liked but we couldn't spend too long at the beach that day.

@PainsOnSlate Hopefully the weather will be nice for it. We live about four hours away so it's quite a trek.

Before, I used to pick up nice sea shells whenever we are on the beach so that I can make an anklet out of it. And I did have some, the boyfriend is the one who makes whole in it. As I can see Amber, it's big. I think it would be better just to leave it like that.

It was the shape of this one that made me want to pick it up. I think I will make a necklace out of it though.
