Parenting: "Do WE need to BURP the INFANT?"

It has been days that I am letting my baby nephew burp. At first, I was so hesitant to do it. I never felt pressured at this point in my life. With the baby in the house made me so stressed out. I was so afraid to carry him and extra care is a must. A baby's burp maneuver will have big time milk spurting out from his little mouth. "Have you tried to burp an infant?" "Are there any other techniques on how to let a baby burp by not carrying him or her?" Image Credit:data: directadvicefordads.com.au

Yes its a must. You can sit the baby on your leg facing away from you with your hand supporting its head and the other patting the babies back.

Can I use a roll pillow or a sausage like a pillow? I was thinking that it is best to support his head while doing it. Am I right with this concern?

I think we need not take any extra efforts to get the burp as it is a natural thing and baby burps out when it is required by his body!

@Shavkat , I am hearing some thing like this for the first time! We raised our son to an adult but we never had any such problem with him!

I do agree with you. I noticed that if I will not burp him up, he cries with a tummy ache.

Yes they definitely have to be burped if not they let out an ear piercing cry that tells you they are hurting. I used to sit my kids on my lap with then leaned forward slightly with their body draped over my arm and my hands supporting their head. I would pat from their lower back upwards to work the burps up. I know when I was older I would get bad gas pains and I would have to go ask my mother if she could get the burp out for me. I was 6 when we moved into that house and I remember sitting on the couch in front of the window so I had to be 6 or older when I would have to ask her to do it.

@shaggin I suddenly remembered my co-worker today. She was having a gas pain in her tummy. I have a funny suggestion that she needs to burp like a baby. As expected, she refused to do so. In my own opinion, it is possible even if we are an adult. What do you think?

It is possible both you and your daughter have a problem getting rid of gas.

It's something I never did, but I know that my mother said she was not really concerned, because a baby burps when his body is ready.

@LadyDuck I think maybe some babies that might be okay but mine would let out an ear piercing screech and I could tell they were in pain and needed to burp. If you read my comment I wrote you can see why I can imagine how they feel as I had to be burped much older sometimes when I got painful trapped gas in there. My daughter and I bought had acid reflux as babies mine which lasted until early adulthood so that could have been part of the problem.

That's what I am so ignorant of doing it. It was really a learning process for me to know how to do it properly.

@shaggin I have no experience with babies, but remember than my younger brother had no problems burping when he was ready, usually adults did not help him.

Yes, it is important to do so....I haven't had to burp a baby in over 4 years, but I remember putting him over my leg and supporting him and burping him with the other hand.

I think it is a good way. I will try to do this. I sometimes feel scared when putting him on my chest.

@MommyOfEli2013 I must admit that it takes many attempts. Now, I can do it with full of confidence. I wanted to carry out uncle's duty for him.

I have a baby niece. She is 5 months old. I don't carry her too because she is too delicate to handle and quite heavy too. I just see my sister carrying her baby just like that in your photo to make her baby burp.

I think 5 months old is quite okay when balancing his or her head. As for my baby nephew is only 3 months, his head balance is not that stable yet.

When my children were born we use to lay them across my lap with a towel under them and rub their backs until they burp. My aunts use to do that to me when I was little to.

@Shavkat Yes it is as you are not hitting the baby to hard and sometimes just rubbing the babies back makes him feel better to. It also gives bonding time for the adult and the baby.

you should know that kabsat. you are a health care provider, right? burping an infant after drinking his milk is necessary so the infant won't regurgitate or have abdominal discomfort,

Yes, I did many times. Baby should need to burp so that they will find comfort with their tummy. The tendency is if they can't burp, they will end up vomiting.

I also noticed that. too. It is not also good to cradle them after sucking milk. It really needs to burp the baby.

@fluffy69 Well, we can do that if they are so adorable. A quick pinch won't hurt them.

@Shavkat not yet. But pinching a baby, yes, ( not to hurt just a squeeze because she was fat.)

It is important to burp them so that the air will not block the passage where they breathe after they drink milk.
