Respect the elders!

I have to say that I'm impressed - in a very bad way, of course - by the number of young people who often do not respect their elders (not only here in my country, but outside it as well). More than an obligation, this is a matter of education, a matter of awareness and love of others... Feelings that should be inherent in all human beings. Will they (silly people) not realize that one day (if they are lucky enough to get there) they too will be old?

That's what I have said to young people. One day you will be in my shoes if you are lucky.

Respect for someone should not be seen from age, but from sincerity.

@kepweng Regret will always come later, until their hearts are opened, then respect someone's can be done. A lot of children now do not respect their parents.

I have brought my young'uns up to respect people. They respect everyone until and unless they are given a reason not to. However, there are also a lot of rude old people around here and I have told my children that, while they should have a general respect for their elders, being elderly does not give people the right to demand respect that is not deserved.

I had a conversation about this with a friend of mine: I joked about making a 17-year-old's head swim by walking into Subway and saying things like, "Sir," "may I please," and "thank you." He laughed, then said, "Don't you think it's incumbent on them to say those words to us as part of the privilege of being older?" I replied, "We're the last generation taught absolutely to use those words, so if we don't use them they'll become extinct." I think part of the problem is that kids today (boy, don't I sound like my mother) don't respect their elders because they aren't taught to respect anyone.

A great many children don't seem to be brought up to respect their elders.

@WiseGhots I am old and I see other old people around that do not have respect. I also see people do not have respect for me either. There are nice elderly here and mean ones as well.

Once in a while a young person will offer me their seat on public transportation and I'm always appreciative of their kindness.

I live in a senior citizen resident and it is shocking how family treats them let alone the young ones! I believe in karma---can't wait until they get old!

Lots of people these days live one day at a time. They don't believe in tomorrow, hence, their attitude.

I think that many do not think about it, and I do not think it has anything to do with years, because there are many and elderly people who do not respect anyone.
