Ouija Board - harmless fun or something else?

Are you aware of the device known as the Ouija Board? Like many people I am aware of its existence but have had no experience with it except as I have seen in various horror movies featuring Ouija Boards and the 'dreadful' consequences of using one. I decided to do some online research on Ouija Boards (also known as 'Talking Boards' or 'Spirit Boards') and see what turned up and, considering everything I have ever heard about them, I was surprised to see that they are sold as toys - Amazon (UK) has a version for under £20. There are even several online versions to both download or play 'live' onscreen. Further research revealed that there are a lot of sites dealing with Ouija Boards, everything from how to use them to why you shouldn't use them along with some quite disturbing stories about the experiences people have had using these boards. If these stories as taken at face value then the Ouija Board is a very dangerous device. It has the power to summon occult entities ranging from deceased relatives to violent demons some of which are very reluctant to return to whatever pits of hell they came from. But can we really believe what people say? As I have said I have no experience with these boards (nor do I intend to seek any) and, as someone who regards himself as quite rational and levelheaded, I have trouble with tales of demonic possession or the summoning of violent demons. From what I can gather those users of the boards in most danger of summoning a malevolent entity are those who are not experienced in the occult - teenagers at a slumber party or a group late at night after a dinner party who decide to spice up the evening with a session on a Ouija Board. These people are (apparently) not able to tell when 'something comes' - only a psychic or a medium has this ability. Are these boards the real deal or are they simply over-hyped nonsense. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with a Ouija Board.

I had a couple of them, I was supposed to get my grandma's but it burned down with her house and it was a old wooden one. Beside that I always made sure I cleaned the board before using it and to place a mirror under it, I can tell you coming from me it's nothing to mess around with and I never let anyone use my board without me being there. This day I won't play with them from what I have seen.

@ThreeTeddies I had this one friend I was staying with and we played together. I told her my rules that you can't play without me and she agreed. The next day my board was no where to be found and I asked her if she seen in and she told me she played with the board after I went to bed and didn't tell the board goodbye. We found the board in the bottom of the oven folded over. Long story short, she moved out of that house not long after that.

we had one when I was a kid as did most of my friends. Used at slumber parties and just a silly board game.

@ThreeTeddies Well, my whole generation was lucky in that case. We never heard these stories about Ouija boards 50 years ago.

We had an Oujia board as kids. Absolutely nothing demonic happen3e. Invariably what happened when we tried to use it..is someone would get bored of waiting and push the device around to make something happen..while denying they were doing it!

There are plenty of scary tales around the Ouija Board. The scientific world harshly criticized the paranormal and supernatural beliefs associated with Ouijas. I have never used one, but I believe that the piece of wood is moved by unconscious movements of the one who is controlling the pointer.

@ThreeTeddies I believe in paranormal and supernatural, but of course it is even too easy to cheat. Slightly moving an object or faking to have seen or understood something it's not difficult, especially if you have created the right atmosphere. I know that I have read the Tarots a couple of times. I laughed about what I have seen saying, this makes no sense, do not worry... well those two people had to worry, it happened.

@LadyDuck The scientific world criticises just about everything about the paranormal and supernature but that doesn't mean there's nothing to such claims. Look at the placebo effect. It's real but doesn't make any sense, or how about homeopathic medicines - they work for many people but again science has no real explanation

There is so much more than meets the eye to an Ouiji board. I have had two in my life. One I had most of my life which I kept in my bedroom when I lived in Riga, Latvia. It gave my room a nice aura and I used to just so it would let me know that all was right in my world. If anyone uses it for the wrong purpose or experiments with it I am sure something bad can happen. When I left Latvia I gave my board to my step-daughter so that the aura and good vibes would continue for her too.

Some family friends told us that their children had tried this game with horrible consequences. They ended up selling their house where the game taken place just to avoid that aggressive spirit.

There are people whom was said to be possessed by the spirit in the oujia board. I had friends whom played with them and they said that they had been possessed by the indian spirit which required them to play to Kali? Anyway it was pretty some years back and I highly doubt that they would lies since they are not likely to know who Kali is

Of course it's dangerous, i just don't understand why people kept using them. If something "else" happens then they deserved it. They shouldn't mess with that thing.

I am aware of them but would never use one. I have heard of nasty things happening but of course it is always hearsay! I have no inclination to explore it myself to be honest!

I've heard much the same as you and so I'm just not interested in playing around with them.

When I was young I bought into all the scary tales and wouldn't have anything to do with them. I had a friends mom who used one though and she really could divine information from it. Unfortunately she like many also tapped into things she didn't understand. Now that I am much older and striving to be more wise I know that the Ouija Board is nothing more than a tool. Like playing cards and pendulums and other such instruments they can also be used as just toys with no divining purpose what-so-ever. Sadly all too often people are exposed to freaky scare tactics that totally destroy the fact of their usefulness to those who understand how to use them. Demons only exist for those who do not understand what is really going on.

@ThreeTeddies Saying demons is perfectly okay. I knew you were using the term in the context of your personal translation table. I have the same translation table as do all those raised in a somewhat christian environment regardless of our personal convictions. I do agree with you. There is something lurking - intent, purpose, beliefs, fears...What a person taps into depends on their personal beliefs and therein lies the trouble. Great conversation by the way.

@Namelesss Good answer! I referred to 'demons' only as a way of giving a name to something we don't understand. Call it whatever you wish but I am convinced that something is lurking behind a board

I have alot about Ouija boards. They are really very dangerous. I believe that , only the ones who are experienced regarding how to use the Ouija board , would be in easy terms to use it properly.

I have 2 but never use them anymore. One of them has never been used at all. I just liked the looks of it. I feel they just depend on how you use them. I also have a couple of sets of tarot cards that I have not used for years.
