Known as The Ravenoak after its location on Ravenoak Road in Cheadle Hulme when first opened in 1882. This was a large sumptuous restaurant bar, which might now be called a bistro-pub, where wealthy diners could eat while listening to live piano recitals. The pub was rebuilt in 1998 by the Hardy & Hanson brewery and renamed The Governor’s House before being taken over by the Greene King Brewery. The sign depicts a huge bunch of heavy duty keys, the ort a prison governor would carry, giving a strange sense of authoritarianism and control to the casual pub customer. Arthur Chappell

@JohnRoberts It is quite distinctive, even unique as a modern sign

I liked the restaurant bars, there were in my native city, but they are disappearing. Those surely are duty keys, no matter what they opened.

I hate keeping keys of any official.cupboards as it takes up a lot of time and stresses me out if I misplace them

@arthurchappell I need to take care of keys during examinations if I am in charge..But usually since it's a team, I give the key ...Ha ha... responsibility to someone else.

The bunch of keys certainly looks like those a jailer might have.
