Kelly's cow has got no tail

I was moving things around in our large cupboard and came across some LP and 78 rpm records. One title caught my eye and I could immediately recall the words and the tune from when we would play such records on a wind-up gramophone. The title of the song was Kelly’s Cow Has Got No Tail. It seems a bit of a strange subject to write a song about. The first verse goes: Kelly’s cow has got no tail and the flies all found it out Kelly’s cow has got no tail and the flies chase her about Oh they drink her milk and they blow her horn You can hear the boys all shout Kelly’s cow has got no tail and the flies all found it out On the flip side is The Girl I Left Behind Me. The songs are sung by the ‘Flanagan Brothers with Novelty Accompaniment’. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to transport you back to your childhood, does it?

What I love about the fact that old songs can take me back to my childhood is that usually the song triggers a very specific memory, something in our brains that was happening when we first heard the song, or when we listened to it during special moments. There are certain songs that as soon as I hear them, they take me back to specific moments in my past, moments that are so etched in my brain that I can remember precisely what I was wearing, what I was doing, and who I was with. Sometimes, listening to an old song can also trigger certain smells or feelings.

I don't think we have anything in the house that would play these now.

@JudyEv I have a tape player and I have a gadget to copy the tapes on the computer. Of course everything takes time and I never do what I should do.

@LadyDuck We still have some tapes. It's good you can copy them to the computer. As you say, it all takes time and sometimes we don't around to doing these things.

@amadeo Most older people do I think. And those with Alzheimers often have good long term memory.

@JudyEv For some reason it tends to bring to my mind the song "Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight?"

But it's fun to listen or see. I found a Viewmaster prints my Mother had made of events that's important to me. I saw that it still worked! So I watched it and was transported back in time fondly. Everyone has passed in the family now, except for a few relatives and friends...that's the sad thing of getting old, people leave you for heaven. But to be transported back in time is priceless.

Most nursery rhymes have an element of cruelty and this song I know is not a nursery rhyme but is cruel too. Wonder what the logic is behind all this.

No, it doesn't take much. All I need to do is find something nostalgic and the memories flow. Interesting title and lyrics.

The flip side song was written in 1928 and Kelly's Cow around 1929 so they are very old.
