Our granddaughter, whose passion is figure skating, had some bad news. Most of you know she had recent problems by breaking her ankle in 6 places during off ice practice and adenovirus with pneumonia. As a result, she missed months of practice.
Although she’s been back on the ice, her coaches had some big concerns.
The first concern is that she’s not ready to begin her most important competition in Lake Placid this month.
Their second concern is that she’s been overly cautious and timid on the ice fearing she will injure herself again, especially her ankle.
As a result, they suggested she see one of the best figure skating psychiatrists in the USA. She has and is doing so much better. She is still under the psychiatrist’s care.
The good news is that our little Ice Princess will be ready to compete in other competitions soon and in Lake Placid in June.
Never a dull minute.
Now I’m off for my morning walk to clear my head and heart. See ya soon.

It is natural to be scared after a bad injury. Glad she is doing better.

After an injury like that it is always the mental scars that take much longer to heal than the physical.
Took me a long time to fully commit myself when playing football (soccer) after returning from breaking an ankle.
Your granddaughter sounds like a determined young lady. I hope she gets to compete and skates off with 1st place!!

@DianneN Not now but it did feel weak for a number of years afterwards. Whether or not that was psychological I don't know. I tended to strap it up quite heavily until I stopped playing regularly some 10 years later.
I don't have any problems these days though and I'm playing football once a week again as well as 3 gym sessions per week.

I think that would make anyone nervous. she is just a kid after all. I hope all this isn't too much pressure for her.

@snowy22315 She’s been motivated since she was 3 years old and spends hours a day on lessons and practice. She has never complained. The day she stops loving it will be fine for us, too. Whatever makes her happy.

It is easy to watch ice-skaters and applaud but now we understand better what these athletes go through to entertain us. May she continue to heal!

@DianneN They can sympathize! I remember the first time I went ice-skating, I had done some roller-skating, fell really hard, did not break anything, but it took me quite a while to to do it again. Thankfully, after that, I did not fall again and never broke anything.

@1hopefulman Ouch! You were very lucky. I fell a few times rollerskating and ice skating. It always hurt like heck, but I've never broken a bone in my life. Knock on wood!

She will get over it with time. I am an authority as I too have broken bones and mentally it takes time to know that those issues get cured with time.

I am glad she is doing better under the psychiatrists care and that she is ready to compete again. I did just learn something new today. I never thought about figure skaters having a psychiatrist (that there is one that specializes in helping figure skaters). Interesting.

Thanks so much. I didn't know that either until our son told us. Apparently, this one only works with figure skaters and must have a booming business due to the amount of injuries. She mostly works with the older skaters in Nationals. Her coaches send lots of skaters to Nationals, so knew of her and highly recommended her. As long as she can help our granddaughter, I wouldn't care if she helped clowns and sea serpents.

I am glad she is getting the help she needs. I am not surprised about her fears at her age and am glad she can continue competing.

Ah good, I'm happy she's able to talk to someone and get back to competing in the fashion that she used to before all the issues.
Also happy that she has some time before the big competition
Great photo

Thanks, Faye. She is missing the big one that sent her to Michigan to represent the state of NY, but hopefully, with the help of the psychiatrist, she will be there next year at the big opening. The other Lake Placid event in June is just one of many competitions. I hope to be home in time to go up there to see her.
