And now, our musical weather forecast from Little Feat: COLD, COLD, COLD. But here's something to warm you up on this frigid Ohio Valley morning: more great music! This is the last "obvious" song on my list of favorites that have "John" or "Johnny" in the title. This is good music to give thoughts of warmth, too! #3: Sloop John B. - Beach Boys See you tomorrow. Okay, a little more detail. This is on my 100 favorites list. Now, see you tomorrow. An absolute classic. I used this in one of the "songs you didn't know were covers" series, pointing out that it goes back to the 19th century. It was first published in a songbook in 1916, and it began "popular" life as a folk song with the Weavers and the Kingston Trio." Ah, but once the Wilson brothers and their friends wrapped their signature harmonies around it, it became nothing but a Beach Boys song. It's difficult to imagine this as anything but a Beach Boys song. That's the mark of a truly legendary band. Sloop John B. Traditional, arranged by Brian Wilson Recorded by the Beach Boys From Pet Sounds, 1966 I feel so broke up:

One of their classics. People don't realize that the Beach Boys are right there on a level with the Beatles and Stones. Apologies to CCR but the Beach Boys are probably the most important and greatest American band ever.

I'll agree with you that their importance, significance, and influence outweighs CCR's by a mile. The Beach Boys had to "compete," as it were, with the Beatles for popularity...and they did it, quite successfully. (I still like CCR better, though.)

@FourWalls I prefer CCR also. The Beatles even paid attention and played "keep up" with the Beach Boys.

We can thank folk music fan Al Jardine who turned Brian Wilson onto the Kingston Trio's recording of the song. For their updated version, a change in the song title and a little changing of the lyrics produced a hit for the Beach Boys!
