I have been watching a 3 part documentary on the separation and control of servants in the 19th century. Domestics and their jobs and station in the home. Hard work from morning to night. An endless list of duties like emptying the slop jars, cleaning shoes and candles each day day after day. All in uniforms depicting their stations. Some were treated horribly while others were treated with more respect.
In reading some publications of the era it was quite common for servants to eat their dinner around 9p. after all their duties were done. They were usually falling into bed by 10p. The higher paid servants would be the butler and housekeeper and they would make about 35 pounds a year.
A hard life from morning to night.

Yes and most people complain today. The work that was done by servants was so hard.

With only a half day out, if they were lucky to get any.

A very hard life and no retirement to look forward to.

Yes, but they had a roof over their heads and food in their stomaches, better than living on the streets and scrounging for food.
