A refugee finds his way back to Australia

The release of Hakeem al-Ariabi, a Bahraini refugee, from a Thai prison has been the main focus of our news programs for some days now. Hakeem plays semi-professional football with the Pascoe Vale Football Club in Melbourne. Before coming to Australia, he was held in detention in Bahrain over an alleged attack on a police station. When he was allowed to travel to Qatar for a football match, he fled to Iran and eventually made it to Australia. Hakeem and his wife arrived in Thailand on their honeymoon and Hakeem was immediately arrested by Thai police. Bahraini officials were seeking his extradition. He spent more than two months in detention and at one time it seemed he would not be released. Many people were instrumental in his release including the two men who helped with the rescue of the Thai school party who were trapped in a cave not so long ago. So that is a nice ending to the story. I just hope he has enough sense to stay in Australia now, hopefully out of harm’s way. The photo is of a Thailand scene from when we were there in the late 1990s.

Let's hope he has learned to stay put for a while, but he seems to be a wandering man.

Why did they put him in jail? Do you know if this was an excuse?

@JudyEv This is the worst condition, you can do nothing. Of course the Thai police should have not arrested him without motivation.

The Thai police imprisoned him as Bahrain wanted him arrested and extradited back to Bahrain. Hakeem believed he was innocent and that the arrest was politically motivated.

@LadyDuck Thailand were caught between Bahrain and Australia. Eventually I think Bahrain dropped the charges but Hakeem wouldn't want to leave Australia for a while I think.

@JudyEv He should better not leave Australia if Barhain is looking to have him extradited. He has been lucky in Thailand that they finally released him.

@topffer I can't imagine what possessed him to go to Thailand in the first place. It was very reckless in my view. I hope he stays put now. A lot of people went to a lot of trouble on his behalf,

This has featured on the news here too. However there is concern that other, less famous people who don't have so many supporters to make a fuss are still falling victim to the Thai authorities.

@WorDazza I know, once they found Sala's body that was the end of it it seemed... although since then I'm glad that money has been raised to look for him too.

I have no problems with international warrants, but they do seem to be abused by some nations. Glad this one ended happily

It depends on the crime and whether innocent/guilty. Hakeem said his arrest was politically motivated but who knows what the truth is?
