I read an interesting comment about wind turbines killing birds.

I did some research about numbers. Globally Wind Turbines kill less than 4 million birds a year.
That is a horrible number.
House cats kill just under 8 million birds a year.
Windows kill more than 500 million birds a year.
I guess you have to be careful when someone throws information in a comment.

That many with windows? I have never seen that. Cats are nature's way of keeping bird population in check. I have engaged environmentalists who want the turbines about the birds and they don't want to hear it.

It is actually more than 500 million for windows. I was just laughing because someone posted that as an ant9-clean energy point on a blog I wrote.

wow. Lily (my black cat) hasn't killed any birds. But she does hiss at them through the window at my bird feeder.

@DocAndersen Most cats will kill birds if they have the chance, and the owners won't necessarily know it. The only way you really know is if your kitty never gets to go outside unattended.

@norcal ITs funny, and you raise an excellent point. My dog is very sweet. The neighbor kids come to our house and pet him.
He has to be outside of our yard on a leash.
Cats, which do some fairly serious damage don't.

It appears many cats do much more than hiss

I had heard that about wind turbines too. I guess you have to keep everything in perspective. My cat stays inside so he kills no birds, not that he wouldn't like to!

I find it interesting that people argue that as a reason why Wind Turbines shouldn't be approved.

I only know that Swiss Government has stopped building Wind Turbines in some areas (where there are no windows and no cats) because the experiment made showed that some species of birds were disappearing. It's not the number sometimes, but there are species that we want to protect. They are now moving the Turbines in another area.

@DocAndersen Very few politician first think, then ask to expert and finally do.

That is unfortunate. Very short sighted in the end. But to be expected.

@DocAndersen No problem. I find errors in my comments all the time and have to edit them.
