Getting My Friday Night Fix

Much of my television watching involves watching the news. I don’t care for the cable news networks that have 24 hour coverage and not much substantive journalism, but I do usually watch a nightly news program. I especially like the PBS News Hour because of their in depth coverage and lack of sensationalism. Every Friday night on the News Hour they have a special segment that I religiously watch called Shields and Brooks, that’s Washington Post columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks. I have been watching this segment on the News Hour since before they were Shields and Brooks. They were Gergen and Shields when I began watching it. In this segment the columnists engage in a succinct and substantive analysis of the week’s major news stories. Mark Shields is a more liberal columnist and David Brooks a more conservative columnist. I especially enjoy this segment because I want to hear both sides of the issues. For a lesson in how to disagree in a nice way, this segment on the News Hour is a perfect example of how to do just that. Mark Shields and David Brooks often take opposite sides of an issue, but they are never disagreeable. They state their opinions in polite, civil ways, and show remarkable good will and respect toward each other. They also have an in depth knowledge of the subjects they are discussing. Their discussions are very different from many political discussions one might hear on cable news shows, and it’s an example many of us might try to emulate.
Syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks join Judy Woodruff to analyze the week in politics, including the president’s nat...

I can't stand the news, it's nothing but drama and stuff..I just wanted a thing about Trump declaring a National emergency for the wall, ugh.

The news nowadays is quite distressing for most of us;however, I think for all of us it's important to stay informed, and much of the news we see online is just false. This little segment only last 5 minutes or so and it will help keep you up to date and better informed. Try it. You may like it.

@toniganzon exactly! Plus they are always throwing false flags and showing us the wrong stuff instead of what's really going on.

@pjmurphy I don't watch the news because it's all so negative and depressing. I'll need to try to remember to watch this show.

It is. And it takes such a short time. I just wish more people would listen to what the other side has to say.

I don't watch much television because of its sensationalism. I do watch the daily New Zealand news and a couple of Brtitish quiz shows.

I must admit, I watch more cable news since the last election. So many crazy things are happening here that we feel drawn to keep up with it. Some just tune out completely because they can't stand the turmoil, but some of us can't take our eyes or ears off of it. We watch now so closely because we genuinely care about what is happening to our country.

I have not watched the news in ages. I read an online newspaper just to know what is going on around me and in the world.

I, totally, agree. Civility is a great way to maintain relationships with friends and family, We can agree to disagree and still remain friends. Sometimes, outside the area of Politics and Religion, one might find common ground in which to develop and grow relationships.

Some of my best and longest friendships have existed "outside the area of politics and religion".

I watch Fox news, just my choice. And the local evening news too.

Fox usually doesn't give a very balance report. I want to hear both sides.

@pjmurphy I don't care to hear the other side, personally. I am not close minded I just have my mind already made up. I have listened to both sides in the past.

I don't know why I watch the news night after night... guess that I'm hoping for a happily ever after story. They don't occur very often... sadly :(

I think I watch the news more regularly now than I did before because I believe this national nightmare is going to end eventually and we'll get back to the normal but not perfect country we had. I want to see it happen.

It would be nice if our politicians would learn to do that.

I hope you get to watch it. I'm just getting ready to watch my recording of the show. That way I can fast forward through most of it to get to their segment.

I like that which you indicate about learning to disagree in a pleasant way: they express their opinions in a polite and civil way, and show a remarkable good will and mutual respect.
