My summer volunteer opportunity! / myLot

I have been studying volcanoes and specifically going to Sakurajima in Kyushu, Japan, during my holidays. When I came back for the third time, last December, I was shooting the breeze with the folks who run the Visitors Center and they said I was very unusual among their visitors for 1. being able to understand both Japanese and English and 2. coming back and staying for more than a day, really getting to know the area. (Most people are four-hour tourists. Boy, they are missing a lot.) So I brought up my idea of being an English-speaking volunteer at the Visitors' Center. To my surprise, they were very enthusiastic about this idea. I sent them a letter last week regarding the dates I was available to volunteer during the summer, and today I got a very happy email from them saying that of course they would love to have me volunteer! I'm very excited. I'm not earning any money, but I can share my beloved Sakurajima volcano with the people who are coming through, and learn more while I'm at it. Have you ever volunteered for something?

Not since I was a kid, back then I did a year or so volunteering at weekends on a nature reserve. Volunteering is actually something I've been thinking of doing for a while. I'm not surprised the people are happy to have you as you'll probably enhance tourists' experiences and that'll probably lead to them getting more visitors
