Being around people that drink a lot is not my cup of tea

I went to a destination wedding in Dominican Republic. And every night, and well into the morning, the people spent their time at the sports bar drinking and drinking and drinking and even partaking in some green stuff. That's not my cup of tea and I do not enjoy being around this scene. I don't have a good time and it gets down, especially when hubby ends up drinking a lot and doing other stuff. And I end up closing off and just sitting there or standing away from these people, trying not to break down, and waiting until hubby finally says we can go home... I did not want to hang out with everyone then but I had no choice. My other option was to either go stay in my room alone or wander the resort alone, which is something I didn't want to do. So I was there at the bar with everyone, at first being okay but then hardly saying a word and sitting there not having a good time, wishing I was somewhere else. The so-called vacation was not really enjoyable for me... If the day went okay the night ruined it for me... I may be naive or stupid but I don't get why people have to spend every night or (even day) of their vacation drinking and drinking like there is no tomorrow?

@Sheali I try to drink at least 2 litres a day. In the summer when It's hot and I'm active it's in the 3-4 litre range.

Our family does a lot of drinking. We always have a great time, and no one gets too crazy. Granted, when we were younger this wasn't always the case. But we never get wild and crazy or rowdy.

I don’t get the need for excessive drinking. People should be able to have fun and enjoy themselves without it.

@porwest Hubby and I went glamping a few years ago with some of his friends and their families. I think it was a weekend thing or a short trip at any rate. The other guys took with them many bottles of tequila and other liquor. Hubby over drank one evening and then ruined the night for me. I had to clean up the out house and deal with getting him to bed. And the next day was ruined as well. Everyone went to hike to the waterfalls. I stayed behind because he was hungover and passed out on the bed. On the plus side, I went mushroom foraging, which I enjoyed, but I’d have rather gone to the waterfalls with hubby.

@lovebuglena This can happen. But I bet that was a fun night for him even if it didn't all work out for you. Luckily, I am at a stage in my life where it never gets this far.

I like a drink, but I don´t like to be near stupid drunkards. And almost everyone that drink too much end up saying stupid things. Fortunately I don´t have those friends but if I had, I´d go to my room.

I don't have friends like that but hubby does. Thankfully he doesn't drink as much or as often as them

I agree - I'm not into that at all. My neighbor has those kinds of parties - when she has the girls only parties, it's particularly worse. I went once - and I will never go again - it's useless having conversations or do anything with people who are drunk out of their minds. If I go on vacation, I want to experience and enjoy the destination . . . getting plastered would be the last thing I'd want to do.

@lovebuglena Maybe in my college days the whole drinking scene would have seemed fun - but not now. Yes, there are tons of other real life experiences one can have on vacation - I see no fun in drinking when like you said you can do it at home. If we saved up to go on an expensive vacation, you bet I'm not going to waste it away at the bar.

@much2say Those people sure love to drink! Thankfully, hubby didn't drink as much as them, yet he drank a lot anyway and seeing him drunk did not leave me happy. One thing I hate is someone can offer him a drink, he says no and yet they keep offering anyway. What kinda friends are that?

And if people want to get plastered, they can get together at home and get plastered for free. No need to spend thousands of dollars to do that.

Destination weddings can be trying... been there and done that... I chose a small group of friends who liked the same things as I did... it worked out nicely... I think that we had more fun because we weren't drinking all night. We did a lot of people watching !!! People can be quite amusing... even spotted a celebrity!!

Being around people that drink and drink a lot I don't feel like I belong or fit in and wish I was somewhere else.
