I got up early this morning to try to get a discussion up before we leave for Perth. The play we are going to see is Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. It promises to be a bit different. I know we have to wear headphones throughout and we’ll be sitting on high-backed chairs in the balcony section. My niece’s husband and son have small parts in the play and the husband’s choir is also featured. The choir includes several members who are wheel-chair bound.
We read Wilder’s The Bridge of San Luis Rey in high school but I can remember nothing about it. I must try to read it again. The photo is of our group at Monastery Landing. Several of us were lined up taking photos of the table so Vince got us all to ‘pose’. His brother on the right was holding the camera back-to-front and took a photo of his chin.

Our Town is a favorite of mine. I first saw it while in high school - it was played by the kids in school. I've seen it several times, still love it.

@JudyEv He was famous for his minimum props. That is what the play was - and it was fantastic.

@PainsOnSlate I didn't know about that. Maybe it was all in the stage instructions - the lack of props.

Love the photo! I especially love the big tree behind all of you. The little adventurous kid in me is screaming "I want to climb that tree right NOW!"

@JudyEv That's awesome! Somewhere in an old photo album I have a similar picture of me standing in front of a hollowed-out sequoia tree in California! In a couple of places they built roads that tunneled right through the middle of the trunks of the massive redwood trees!

@moffittjc Some of the trees are amazing aren't they? I've seen a very old photo of a pair of horses and a buggy on top of a fallen tree trunk that had had a slice taken off it.

The part where the play was held was open to the sky so we wouldn't have been able to hear without the headphones.

Funny ! he took a photo of his chin. Now many smart phones have the selfie function without holding the phone back- to-front.

How exciting for you! Have a wonderful time.
Our neighbor, the playwright Israel Horovitz, was good friends with Thornton Wilder. He used to visit him often at his home in the town our new daughter-in-law grew up in. Her parents used to see Thornton around town. He was so well loved, besides being a 3 time Pulitzer Prize winner for Our Town, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and The Skin of Our Teeth.
