Here in DC there is a .05 cents bag tax!!! If they do not ask for .05 cents they could receive a $1,000.00 fine!! The tax was to clean up the Anacostia river!! Read This is actually working!! The River is much cleaner!!! Many people think this tax can now be removed!!! That's 30.00 per year more out of consumers pockets!! And that's quite a lotta money for folks on limited income!!! Do You have such a tax in your town that you think should be removed??!!

In the UK we have had to pay 5p for a plastic bag (unless we bring our own) for some time now. It is claimed that this has reduced the single-use plastic bag use by 86%.
New figures show sales of 5p bags in England continued to fall in 2017/18.

@db20747 I think that a reduction of 86% speaks for itself. Many more people now bring their own bags when they shop. What we now need to do is to drastically reduce the amount of plastic used in packaging, especially plastics which can't be recycled or are not biodegradable. There are also all the unseen microplastics which get into the environment - tiny plastic granules in cosmetics and cleaning products, for example ... not to mention all those greetings cards with glitter on them!

We don't have it in North Carolina, but in California we did. Most people just bring their own reusable bag to the store.

We pay for the plastic bags from 3 years, 20 cents per bad. This is to try to reduce the highly polluting usage of plastic. I appreciate the effort. The usage of plastic bags has been reduced by 80% here now that people have to pay.

20 cents is quite a lot! For about that, many supermarkets here will sell you a very sturdy bag which lasts for ages. I think that nearly everyone here brings their own bag now whenever they go shopping, even though the charge for a single use bag is only 5p.

@owlwings They decided to charge a pretty high price to incentive people to bring their own bags. For 50 cents we can buy a reusable sturdy bag, almost no one wants an expensive plastic bag now.

I remember I went to a pharmacy in DC and I'd have to spend 5 cents for a bag. And of course if you double bag that's 10 cents. I was surprised at that because the same pharmacy in NYC doesn't charge that. I think it was CVS but I could be wrong.

@db20747 Only place where we are charged for bags in NYC (as far as I know) is Lidl and maybe Aldi.

Not tax but fees, they should remove garbage fee because they are not collecting garbage properly.

@db20747 it's a big issue over here because our national government issued closure order to close open dumpsite but local government is not ready.

We don’t have that in Kentucky. I’m amused how everything new is old again....remember “deposit” money on Coke bottles? Now there are a number of states that have “deposits” on the plastic bottles!

@db20747 — I don’t know because we don’t have it here. I would think it would be like returning glass bottles in the old days.

no such tax here, but there aint no waterways neither. i don't think the tax ought'a be removed. folks jest need to bring their own re-usable bags. 'fter spendin' 4 hours peelin' other folks plastic bags ('n other plastic trash...) off one 'f my fence lines from folks down the road, i wish they'd such a tax here. i despise plastic.
