Windows Vista Computer

Hi MyLot! So I'm happy to say that I recently revived a computer I had. Maybe it sounds frivolous but I have this laptop - and for the longest time I wasn't sure if it was a power cord issue, or if it was the part inside the computer that holds the power cord. At the time it broke I had another laptop and just didn't feel like buying the power cord, which, at the time was around $50. Finally the price for the cord dropped, so I got one. And tada! Laptop back in business. As delighted as I am to have Windows Vista back because I'm not a huge fan of 10... I have discovered that Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft. Worse, it seems like a lot of the current versions of web browsers don't want to work on the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a browser that will still work with Vista, or does anyone know about switching OS to Linux? Thanks! Photo: Pixabay

Wish I could help. I'm computer illiterate. I only know my Windows 10 computer up north and my Apple laptop down here.

If I were you, I would change to Windows 7 it's the best so far. I have it in my computer and it runs perfectly!

@jvicentevalera That's so wrong. I wish as a Windows customer we were allowed to downgrade to whatever version we like

@FayeHazel Well, If I had not been forced to switch to Windows 7, I would still be using Windows XP, thing with XP is that there are no updates for it these days.

That's interesting that Microsoft doesn't support Vista. I've never used Vista, so can't help.

I may help to install Linux, but you have to answer to a few questions first. Is it a 32 or a 64 bits laptop ? Has it a CD/DVD drive ? How many RAM memory ?

Thanks for the offer. I don't actually have it here with me, but next time I will jot down that info. If I do install Linux - does that then overwrite Windows as the OS?

@FayeHazel Only if it is what you want to do, you can have 2 OS in 2 different partitions on the same HDD. Or run Linux on an external drive. But you risk to be limited on the flavor of Linux that may be installed on a 15 years old laptop, it is why I was asking these questions.

@topffer Wow, I thought I had read something like that - about the 2 OS thing. I will look the next time I'm around the laptop the specs. I figure I have no valuable files on there - and I may as well try Linux always wanted to give it a spin

I think what you can do is a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 on your PC. Trust me it's better and you will have great experience in terms of new features by Microsoft and other apps support.

You are probably right - at least there would be support for it. Pity - I liked Vista better :/
