What Too Much Salt Can Do To Your Body

We all need salt in our diet to help with sleep quality, insulin resistance and hypertension. Most people need between 2,500 and 6,000 milligrams per day. Sea salt is the best choice. Salt works with potassium which keeps your blood pressure down. About 97% of Americans are deficient in potassium. You can find potassium in sweet potatoes, butternut and acorn squash, cooked spinach, hazelnuts, pistachios, wild salmon and avocados. You can tell you are getting too much salt if you are thirsty all of the time, eating too much processed foods, you have high blood pressure, swelling under your eyes; swollen arms, hands or feet; get persistent or severe headaches, you get kidney stones, or you can't concentrate.

You missed my favorite - bananas. Added salt isn't part of my diet. I must be getting what I need as the doctor has only said I was deficient in salt once. I swell easily with salt.

I cannot stand bannannas. But I hear the potassium helps to absorb and get rid of the salt. Maybe I should just force them down.

@porwest You could try slicing them in small pieces and eating only one-half at a time maybe in cereal.

@porwest I'm sure there are other great sources of potassium.

That does suck. I just eat what I want. Just not a lot of salt.

Yes indeed, I have to keep a close eye on my intake because of inner ear problems.

As I age my sodium level tends to be too low.

I am on a salt restriction. 2000 mg or less a day. But I have high blood pressure and am taking medication for it. Not sure what the answer is here. We NEED salt, but so much out there has SO MUCH salt it is mind boggling.

I think it is a matter of watching how much we add to our food. Most things already have it in.

I do not think I'm taking too much salt. Just normal. I just can not imagine eating non-salty foods
