Amazing Stories- What Age Is To Old To Be A Fire Fighter?

When is it to old to work as a fireman? Well, if your John Kooreman, a 92-year-old volunteer firefighter in Wayne, New Jersey (U.S.), you can't place an age limit on helping out around the firehouse. He is enjoying his 75th anniversary being a fireman in Hawthorne, Haledon, and then Wayne. According to this story I read in NJ 101.5.com, while he no longer rides the truck or goes on calls, he still participates in drills, goes to meetings, and is a consistent presence at the firehouse. Due to a lack of men during WW II, Kooreman was allowed to join the fire department at eighteen, when the appropriate age was 21. To be able to still participate at his age is truely an amazing story. The most recent title holder of oldest active firefighter in the nation was 77 year old Billy-Gene Holder from Texas, who hung up his helmet in 2011. Do you know anyone who worked well past retirement age? I once worked with a 78 year old gentlemen employed as a retail salesman. And a friend of mine's mother was employed as a DYFS worker in the state of New Jersey (U.S.) until retiring at age 82. To have that kind of energy to work till that age is really something? That is awesome that he is being included in the everyday workings of a Fire Station. Sure there's going to be areas where he can't participate, but he's being made feel welcome. I think that's awesome!!

Yes, I'm sure he appreciates being able to be part of the firehouse team. Makes him feel useful and keeps him young at heart

I know plenty of people who worked well past retirement age, many doctors still work in their late 70. For a firefighter the agility is important, they are not allowed to work after retirement age here.

Yes, in certain occupations one must have the necessary skills to do the job well. Being a volunteer unit it is nice they accommodate him in some way so he can participate and feel part of a team. At 90 (if I'm around) I hope to have the energy to get out of bed let alone doing fire drills (just kidding)

@dgobucks226 I do not believe I would be ready to help the firefighters when I am 90, I would not even now.

It's truly amazing he can still work around the station. I don't know anyone personally still working after retirement.
