Why is Pizza so well-known and liked in the U.S.?

Did you ever wonder how this Italian flatbread savoury relish became an American sensation? Such huge love for pizza that Americans eat 150 acres of pizza a day? That would be 400 slices of pizza per second? Like most Americans, pizza immigrated, as well. 4 million Italians of the 20 million immigrants legally entered USA between 1880 and 1920. All the exotic, epicurean tasty cheeses and sauces came along with the Italian immigrants. . Pizza, back in Naples, Italy, were traditional diet and staple served on family dinners, made and sold to busy working class. Did you know that pizza is not Italian to begin with? Naples was founded by Greek settlers around 600 BCE, and pizza is known to have existed there before the city was unified with the rest of Italy in 1861. And Italian cuisine businesses became popularly introduced until the 1940s with their pizza pride and medal. Do you agree that the sumptuous cheesy meat and savoury flatbread delight, called, pizza, was much more American than Italian?

I never knew about pizza being formed by the Greeks. I've had Italian pizza in Italy several times, and truly love the pizza in the US much more. More variety and much better crusts, especially those restaurants in the Italian neighborhoods of New York and Little Italy in New Haven, CT.

Well, as I am Italian I know that pizza was born as a street food in Napoli (Naples) and that the first pizza were "white", because tomatoes were not yet been "discovered". American pizza has another taste, I still prefer our pizza.

Thank you. I agree, original Italian pizzas, cooked by genuine, bonafide Italians, are still the best in town!

@LadyDuck American 'preposterous' taste buds are playing tricks on them, aren't they? My daughter used to be the Chef for 3 years in an Italian-owned cafe restaurant. She knows the genuine epicurean taste of Italian cuisine. And I worked there as a Kitchen Hand.

I've no idea if it's more american than Italian, but I can say that many families probably eat pizza every week at least. They also eat some Mexican and some eat asian foods too. The younger generation eat pizza even more often than their parents ever did. When I grew up we had it some, but not as often as we had it when my kids were young. In fact, ,we had it so much back then, but only on a weekly basis that I finally became tired of eating any pizza. After a few years I tried a thinner crust pizza and that's the type I now enjoy.

I don't know much about the history of pizza! Our friend @LadyDuck is Italian and, of course, she knows much about pizza. Mama Mia, I did not even know that there is a white pizza! Let me keep reading all comments here to learn more about pizza. There is one thing that I can say about pizza - - Hawaiian pizza was born here in Canada not in Hawaii!

Mama mia is written "Mamma mia". I knew that that horrible Hawaiian pizza has been created in Canada, I was sure of one thing, NOT in Italy.

@antonbunot As I said in another comment I am a northern. I eat pizza may be three times a year. We are not pizza eaters in the north, it's not at all a dish we like and eat. Imagine a garbage pizza! I do not even want to see it.

The pizza we eat here is 100% American. We've done our own thing with it for sure, and any pizza served in America would be foreign in Italy. We eat it and we like it because the way we make it here is DELICIOUS!

What is the biggest differences between Italian and American pizzas?
8 Mar 19
@porwest Probably. But all pizzerias in any state and local areas get their ingredients or meat from a common suppliers. It's probably the style or method?

@Aquitaine24 Honestly flavor and toppings. Italian pizzas are very simple. Americans use more spices and add many more toppings to their pizzas, including stuffing crusts etc. I actually had traditional spaghetti once from an Italian woman I knew who made 'authentic' spaghetti and I thought it was very bland and runny. Ours in the U.S. is thick and loaded.
