In a desperate attempt to get one of our traveling myLotters to schedule some time here with Lori and me, I'm counting down ten of the great tourist spots in Kentucky. I've already looked at Louisville, where many of the most prominent tourist spots are (e.g., the Kentucky Derby, the Ali Center). Here's another place from elsewhere in our great state.
#9: National Corvette Museum
We have a lot of things that are singularly unique to Kentucky. I'll discuss another one of those things in another discussion. Meanwhile, we're talking cars faster than Tracy Chapman here: the legendary Corvette. If you see one zooming past you, there's only one place it came from: the GM Corvette plant in Bowling Green.
I don't see any need for one. I mean, I can pay off my house and car for less than a new 'Vette costs. It's a status symbol, I guess.
While you can't go to the plant and pick up a sample Corvette (just like the gold bars at Fort Knox, darn all our rotten luck), you can go next door to the National Corvette Museum and visit the history of the famous car.
You may have heard about this place: in 2014 a large sinkhole under the museum opened and swallowed a number of cars that were on display. While all but one of the cars have been restored and the sinkhole closed up, it was a major addition to the Museum for some time. Even now, you can peek down a manhole cover at what was.
Admission is $10, with discounts for seniors and children.

I've driven past that museum more times than I can count. But not since the sinkhole so I probably wouldn't recognize it anymore.

The sinkhole didn't change the exterior. It all occurred inside the building.

@FourWalls I don't know if we'll ever drive that route again. Now when we go through Kentucky it's more likely to be East-West than North-South.

We don't have "regular" sinkholes. They determined the shape of the roof allowed water to fall and collect in one particular area that caused the sinkhole.

@FourWalls I know nothing about earth science. I never took it and I don't teach it.

I live only about 30 miles from Bowling Green, but I've never been to the Corvette Museum. My husband went last year with his son, but it just never interested me. Kentucky is a lovely state, though. I was born there and I'm still a Kentuckian at heart even though I live in Tennessee now.

I should do a countdown of my favorites in Tennessee, too!

People were crying because so many vintage Corvettes were “destroyed.” But they made lemonade out of lemons (and made a pie to boot!) by turning the damage into part of the museum while the cars were being restored.

I hope so. As the Everly Brothers said, "A man in Kentucky sure is lucky to live down in Bowling Green."

I grew up with my parents owning a 1964 Vette.

I'm impressed. Of course, when I was looking to replace my Chevette in 1988 the Corvette on the lot cost more than the house I bought the next year. Things were different in '64.
