Michelangelo sculpted the David between 1501 and 1504. The statue is about 17 feet tall. The statue has David's body most directly supported by his right leg, with a part of the original block of marble being behind that leg also for support of the body. This statue was sculpted from a 'flawed' block of marble which someone else had already rejected. In his left hand, David holds the sling with which he will kill Goliath, with one of 'five smooth stones' for use with the sling. The statue was originally planned for the roofline of the Florence Cathedral, but was first paced in Ufizzi Square, the main square of Florence. The statue was moved from the square to The Accademia in 1873. A replica stands where the original statue stood. Facts from Wikipedia and my visits to Florence

Interesting about the statue. I have never been to Florence but I have read about this beautiful city and wrote about it on my armchair travel blog.

David was a shepard and became the Jewish King of Israel and our Mashiach will come from his line,. David was born in Israel and buried here also. Here is some information on King David of Israel: Born around 1000 BCE, David was the eighth son (and youngest) of Jesse, from the tribe of Judah. Like King Saul and King Solomon, David reigned for 40 years in one of the highest and most prosperous periods in Israel's history - called by many, “The Golden Age” of Israel.
