Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," also called Shrove Tuesday. It is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Christian Lent season leading up to Easter.
During Lent, many Christians fast, and the name Fat Tuesday refers to the last day of eating richer foods before the leaner days of Lent begin. In 2019, Mardi Gras falls on March 5.
Today, March 5th, the streets of New Orleans will fill up with people dressed in costume tossing beads in honor of Mardi Gras. The celebration actually started in Mobile, AL but New Orleans has the biggest celebrations and parades.

Have you been to Mardi Gras before? I used to have the day off when I lived in New Orleans. That is how big the celebration is there. Lots of fun. Are you familiar with Mardi Gras? Any memories to share?

I've never been before, but if all goes according to plan next year I'll be in New Orleans this time of year and will see what it's all about. My husband and I are going with our church in Ohio to Mexico and the cruise ship is leaving from New Orleans. The group we'll be with are planning on being in New Orleans a few days either before or after our cruise.
I'm hoping we can get a ride to New Orleans with them assuming they are taking a bus down and back. If we have to find our own way, we'll probably look for a deal on a flight and maybe not stay extra days in the area, but will have to see on that.

@CarolDM I'm sure we will be eating while there, but I only like certain fish and not all the different types of seafood although I'm willing to try new things sometimes. I'm not interested in checking out sushi at this time.

I will go one day but probably to Mobile. I love NOLA and I will take a nice long vacation there, later in the summer.

So there will be a lot of beads at the venue of the Mardi Gras? It's interesting to know about this tradition before Ash Wednesday.

I've never been to Mardi Gras but I am familiar with it. My mother-in-law was born and raised in New Orleans and until Katrina we regularly visited extended family there. Everyone is gone now, scattered to the winds.
