Happy Women's Day, My Lot! To be honest I don't know how this day is celebrated, it (thankfully) isn't a greeting card holiday (we have enough of those) and no one I know does anything for it... but here it is none the less. I think it is a great day for awareness about social and gender roles. We have come a long way , but there is still much to be done. In the 1950s - women typically stayed at home and took care of the house, while the husband worked. I'm not saying this is fair, as women deserve a chance at a career and their own finances as well... but I will say that say that caring (well) for a home is a job. Between the laundry, bedding, floors, dusting, cooking, grocery shopping, meal planning, bill paying, bathroom and kitchen cleaning, dishes, ironing - etc - it is true it takes a lot to keep a household working. However with women in the workforce - woman in most situations are still expected to do the lion's share of the house drudgery, even with both partners are working away from home. Women are subjected to unfair beauty standards and only one type of beauty is usually promoted. (Yes, I am thinking the thin, young, blonde - nothing against anyone thin, young, and blonde, but there are more shades of attractiveness and all need representing) -- And this sort of thinking makes women more subject to falling for the latest diet plan, pill, gym membership, miracle cream, etc. (again, nothing against anyone who diets, works out, buys the cream, etc - I'm just saying that making people feel inadequate = big business.) And the above type of thinking creates enemies out of women as they vie for who can out do who... instead of cheering for each other. So that's my message to women - let's not view each other as competition but allies! Fix each other's crowns and be the queens and princesses we are. Let's start being more open minded to what beauty is - on the inside, and on the outside as well. Let's not support "anti-age" let's support "pro-age". I don't know if there's men's day, but if there is, there should be and in my opinion it should be a day to bring to light the toxic messages that are leveled at men... such as men aren't to show emotions and other such harmful messages. My two cents. Happy Women's Day :

I'll probably take a lot of flak for this but it's from the (obvious fake) letters page from the UK adult comic called Viz. Made me laugh anyway!! And, for what it's worth, thin, young, blonde doesn't really do it for a lot of men. Most of us aren't as shallow as we are made out to be.

I often feel sorry for today's males. Well, maybe not often - but occasionally.

So true. I think men's day should tackle some of the hostile messages that men are exposed to, too

On this day, all I see is people posting about the wonderful women in their lives, or their women heros. Not much else happens, I think.

I'm of the age that I was on the cutting edge of the women's movement and I embraced it all the way. Still do. But I've always loved the term homemaker. Never liked the term housewife, but I've always loved being a homemaker. Making a home. What's not to like. I still love it.

Oh that must have been so exciting. Homemaker - I tend to agree. It is a full time occupation and something to be proud of. It's just sad it's often so underappreciated.

That is so true. Occasionally there will be a woman I come across who I just don't get along with... but that's ok, I just avoid in those cases.
