My First Time Using All Fingers in Typing

I never thought it's easier and more comfortable. I used to type using 2 - 4 fingers only. I'm one of the fastest, if not the fastest when it comes to typing. One of our clients said, "You are faster than a speeding bullet!" I can reply to emails in a matter of seconds. I've been practicing to type using all of my fingers for 2 weeks now for 1-2 hours a day. It's cool. I'm using the book which my cousin lent me. This is better than any YOU tube or Internet tutorials.

I don't think I'm very fast, but I do use all my fingers. It depends a bit on the keyboard of fast I type, some sizes are better than others. I like my work computer, it fits the size of my hands. I have another work computer which is a bit too small, so I use a normal keyboard with it when I'm at work. My father uses two fingers plus one thumb, but he can type quite fast anyway. I tried that method, it didn't work at all for me.

I'm so slow now, but I'll practice more. When I'm at work, I sometimes go back to using few fingers only, but I realized I can't master typing using all fingers if I always go back to my old habit. I need to be patient. I envy those who can type using all fingers like you, @Torunn. Was it self study or did you learn it in school? I never had a chance because during my time, only those with typewriter can enroll in typing. That time, there were only two among my classmates who had a typewriter. They were so lucky!

@wittynet in our time, this is part of the curriculum and there's a typing room where classes are held. You don't really have to bring your own typewriter. This is particularly offered to those taking up business and secretarial courses.

@florelway We didn't have typing lesson when I was in elementary, 1980-1986. We had when I was in high school, 1986-1990, but we needed to bring our own typewriter. When I was in college, 1990-1994, I didn't have any typing subjects. I took Spanish class, which was replaced with Computer subject that year Whenever I had a project that needed to be typed, I borrowed a typewriter from a house mate. No one taught me how to type. I learned it myself. I remember I used to count how many letters each sentence has for me to count on needed spaces to have a correct margin on both sides. What a VERY old fashioned way of typing! I can't imagine I can go back to that kind of life again.

I remember the days of what I call "chicken pecking" but thankfully we learned in school how to type. It was pretty much required for us to learn which obviously it was a good thing. I am not the fastest typer, it depends on the keyboard I am using. Unless I am angry, and then my speed will zoom haha

Oh YES! me too! When I'm angry or annoyed, I type faster. My school was a public institution. They can't require us for they didn't have typewriters or computers in school for students to use. I don't know if it already changes as its been decades now. I hope their students can now enjoy using nee technologies.

@DesirousDreamer I think it has. I haven't checked on that when I visit my parents and relatives in the province (countryside). In Europe, my nephew does not have any typing lesson yet. He's already 14 yrs old. I wonder why typing is not introduced in elementary years.

@wittynet I am sure it has changed. Since I think typing classes were something that started in the 80s? We don't even have classes just for typing anymore. We learned in a technology class, but we were still typing before that.

@wittynet I have never had coordination between my two hands. Now it is worse as I am old.

Thanks, @marguicha. You may want to try. It's fun! I bought a cordless keyboard just to practice this. I love the very first lesson - putting all fingers on asdf and jkl; without looking at the keyboard, then removing the fingers and putting 2 hands on my lap, then putting back my fingers on the keyboard, not looking again, until I master it. I never thought I can memorize where each of my fingers should be.

@marguicha I thought I can't also learn how to use all my fingers. Typing an a with my smallest finger was a struggle before. I never thought it's possible if all fingers are used. My smallest finger is now okay not only with letter a but also with letters q, z, p, and so many punctuation marks plus shift enter, etc. I wonder why the smallest one is assigned most if the letters. Maybe because it's the closest.

I learned to type with my 10 fingers in school when I was 15, I am fast as a speeding bullet.

@LadyDuck I can feel it though I never used my index finger whenever I had a chance to use a manual typewriter. It's so difficult for me to use my index finger now, but it was more difficult when I was starting to practice typing asdf. I feel a bit comfortable now. I know I can be better if I'll not give up. Last night, it was a struggle. I needed to reply to several emails, and tried to use all my fingers. My cousin was right. I should always put my fingers on the home key, if not, I'll get confused where each letter is and what finger to use.

@wittynet When I started to type we had manual typewriters, it was very hard the first week to use the small finger, I remember how much it hurt at the end of the day. Now I have so much the habit.

@wittynet Yu must position your fingers and never move them. In the old typewriters the F and J key were a little different so you can feel them with your indexes without having to look at the keyboard.

I have no use for all fingers typing. I have been typing with my forefingers for years and years, and I type very fast. Probably somewhere around 150-200 words a minute. I see no point in trying to fix something that works just fine as it is.

Wow! You're so fast! In my case I can type so fast, but I noticed some of my fingers especially the middle one in my right hand is sometimes getting frozen. Not sure if it's because of aging or it's because it's not used the whole day. When I started using all my fingers, I feel more confident and my middle finger feels relaxed.

@porwest what is your magic? I can type fast using few fingers, but not as fast as you. I think mine is 40-50 words per minute.

@wittynet At the end of the day if it works for you, it seems a good thing to do.

@@Sojourn, I agree! The best thing about this is you can type without looking at the keyboard!

I type with all my fingers. I can't manage to type with two fingers only. Now I think your typing speed is faster

@wittynet In fact my typing speed is improved because of online text chatting in the past. It is better than any typing practice programs

@youless yes, chatting also helped me a lot. We use Skype for business in the office, and one newbie told me that I'm so fast. Maybe he was thinking it doesn't suit me because I'm so old. One friend told me he never thought I'm very fast in using excel. He said he felt older than I am. Why do they always associate age with being slow or weak?

Wow! I always envy those who can type using all fingers. One of my colleagues said she knows when someone doesn't know how to type by merely listening to the sound. Most of the time, those who don't know how to type makes loud keyboard sounds. It's true. When it's so quiet at work and I'm replying to urgent issues, I sometimes feel shy because of the sound I'm making while typing. Tonight is my first night to type using all my fingers at work. Let's see if the sound will not be so audible this time. I hope so.

That's great. I think we are catching up with modernization. I also tried to enhance this skill since I am teaching online

My cousin said she studied this for 2 years. She added if I want to perfect this, I need to repeat typing each exercise 3x. I said I'll repeat each 5x. But now I feel so lazy to continue. It's a bit boring now. I need to focus.

@Shavkat THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME! I appreciate it. I always heard about that sentence, but never paid attention at all since I wasn't using all my fingers. If you didn't mention it, I think I can't recall that that sentence has all letters of the English alphabet and would be an excellent practice typing exercise. THANK YOU again!

@wittynet I think you can try to type this statement: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." All the keyboard's letters will be used by typing. I learned this when learning to type on a typewriter before. It sounds an old school, but still effective.

i didn't know there were books about learning how to type, but it's great it's more effective for you than videos. i learned in high school then again in college, so i've always used all fingers. what's strange, though, was when computers came along, i stopped using the right shift key. so when i have to use capital letters on the left side of the keyboard, i use all fingers in my left hand even if it's awkward.

I started learning from You Tube tutorials, but I noticed this book is better than any online tutorials I found so far. I tried using the right shift key, but it's a struggle. It's very far from my right index finger. I found a workaround not only for the right but also for the left. I decided to use the CAPS lock key. It's easier to use.
