"Why Dress Shoes for Men?"

I am sure most of you know those shoes to be worn on a wedding is called 'dress shoes.' It sounds weird saying 'dress shoes' for men. Since men are not wearing a dress. I cannot change the term because it was being used. It runs to my mind that it is best to use formal shoes instead. Nowadays, the fashion trend is wearing a suit with sneakers. The old-fashioned way was starting to be fade away. "Which do you prefer in wearing a suit, the old-fashion way of wearing dress shoes or not?" Image Credit:http:cache.mrporter.com

I think it is fine to skater shoes since it cannot be seen. I do agree with you that men should wear dress shoes on this special occasion. Is it nerve-wracking during the wedding day? I am curious...

@Shavkat I'm not a person that freaks out very much unless it's worried about food, so to me my wedding wasn't nerve wracking at all.

@LadyDuck Only very young men. They look as elegant as when they are wearing tattoos on their faces.

yes, dress shoes is we call leather shoes/formal shoes. there's also dress pants (what we call slacks) and dress shirts (what we call long sleeves). i'd rather see loafers or topsiders matched with slacks in semi-formal/formal settings if they don't want to wear leather shoes. if they really want to wear sneakers, then maybe choose a black one so it's not obvious.

@Shavkat same with sneakers. father had one he rarely used (it was a gift). i decided to wear it one day and the sole came off! good thing i was already at the entrance of the mall and they were selling flipflops right there so i bought one and went to the ladies room. it seems that leather and rubber both have to be used once in a while so they get stretched, not brittle.

This is the first time I hear about dress shoes. anyway, depends on your style. some groovy style prefers sneakers why not. and also depends on the occassion and the people who are having the party, and or course.. self confidence.

In my country, there are so many people had changed the traditional one. That's how modernization changes people's preference. I don't have a low opinion about it.

@Shavkat i think it would be better if the wearer will be wearing what is comfortable physically and emotionally. or he can always bring a pair of sneakers for change.

@Mavic123456 I think it depends what would be the wedding theme. If it is like such a theme, then it would be fine.

Dress shoes with suits just look much better. I have not worn real shoes myself for a very long time. I prefer wearing Crocs in all kinds of colors and sports shoes if it is cold out.

I do like Crocs, too. I think it is best when walking along the seaside. I like your place. I remembered that I had a friend living West Palm Beach. Are you near this place?

I prefer dress shoes with suits, and the term is a different use of the word 'dress' than when speaking of the garment a woman wears.

Well, after reading of dress robes in Harry Potter, I guess 'dress shoes' is fine. Hahaha. I won't be the one wearing them, but I think wearing formal shoes with suits looks nicer than sneakers. Just my opinion. :)

I agree that it is better to wear formal shoes than having sneakers and the like. Being an old school is not bad after all.

It's funny... I never thought of the connection before. Dress shoes was simply something men wore on special occasions! The next time hubby gets dressed up, I'm going to bring about pair of sneakers to see his reaction lol!!!

I am sure he will be shocked. I also find it weird. I often being asked by my online students about this. I just simply say that we cannot change it. It is how it was being created.

Suit with sneakers is really horrible, if you want to wear sneaker keep casual. If you want to wear a suit wear dress shoes.

@Shavkat I never thought of it and that was a good one. You are right why are they called dress shoes. I prefer skirts but want to get some new jumpers if they look good on me when they come in. I thought of that because since I lost weight I want to wear a jumper and not a dress.

I think it is your discretion to wear things that will be comfortable. I am not sure with the jumper thing. I haven't seen one wearing it during the wedding day.

Hang on, you can't wear that pair of shoes to work, that is, if you work in the office? (I know nothing about men shoes.)

I don't need to wear this anymore. Since I don't work in the office. I don't use this kind of shoes when still working in the company. I prefer no shoe laces.

Well, you have to understand the English language a bit better. Yes, a dress is something a woman typically wears. But dress is also something you do. You dress in the morning, for example. Dress is also considered "something more formal and nice." You can also dress a salad, that is you put a dressing on it. You can "dress up" something, that is, to make something better. Many words in the English language have multiple meanings. THAT all aside, in most circles sneakers would not be considered dress at all. You'd more likely be called a slob.

Indeed. Sometimes it is mind-blowing to know some English words with different meanings and that includes the need to learn the Parts of Speech of these words. Some non-native speakers will take it literally. That would be another story of learning the language. Moreover, sneakers are not really for this kind of occasion. I am sure the old folks will judge them as you mentioned, the slob.

Since I am not working in a company, I usually wear sneaker or slippers when going out. I feel the freedom of not thinking about what to wear every day.
