"Why Dress Shoes for Men?"

I am sure most of you know those shoes to be worn on a wedding is called 'dress shoes.' It sounds weird saying 'dress shoes' for men. Since men are not wearing a dress. I cannot change the term because it was being used. It runs to my mind that it is best to use formal shoes instead.
Nowadays, the fashion trend is wearing a suit with sneakers. The old-fashioned way was starting to be fade away.
"Which do you prefer in wearing a suit, the old-fashion way of wearing dress shoes or not?"

@Shavkat I'm not a person that freaks out very much unless it's worried about food, so to me my wedding wasn't nerve wracking at all.

@LadyDuck Only very young men. They look as elegant as when they are wearing tattoos on their faces.

yes, dress shoes is we call leather shoes/formal shoes. there's also dress pants (what we call slacks) and dress shirts (what we call long sleeves).
i'd rather see loafers or topsiders matched with slacks in semi-formal/formal settings if they don't want to wear leather shoes.
if they really want to wear sneakers, then maybe choose a black one so it's not obvious.

@hereandthere I agree. We need to let them in good condition since they are expensive.

@Shavkat same with sneakers. father had one he rarely used (it was a gift). i decided to wear it one day and the sole came off! good thing i was already at the entrance of the mall and they were selling flipflops right there so i bought one and went to the ladies room. it seems that leather and rubber both have to be used once in a while so they get stretched, not brittle.

This is the first time I hear about dress shoes. anyway, depends on your style. some groovy style prefers sneakers why not. and also depends on the occassion and the people who are having the party, and or course.. self confidence.

@Shavkat i think it would be better if the wearer will be wearing what is comfortable physically and emotionally. or he can always bring a pair of sneakers for change.

@Mavic123456 I think it depends what would be the wedding theme. If it is like such a theme, then it would be fine.

Dress shoes with suits just look much better. I have not worn real shoes myself for a very long time. I prefer wearing Crocs in all kinds of colors and sports shoes if it is cold out.

It's funny... I never thought of the connection before. Dress shoes was simply something men wore on special occasions! The next time hubby gets dressed up, I'm going to bring about pair of sneakers to see his reaction lol!!!

I never thought of it and that was a good one. You are right why are they called dress shoes. I prefer skirts but want to get some new jumpers if they look good on me when they come in. I thought of that because since I lost weight I want to wear a jumper and not a dress.

Well, you have to understand the English language a bit better. Yes, a dress is something a woman typically wears. But dress is also something you do. You dress in the morning, for example. Dress is also considered "something more formal and nice." You can also dress a salad, that is you put a dressing on it. You can "dress up" something, that is, to make something better. Many words in the English language have multiple meanings. THAT all aside, in most circles sneakers would not be considered dress at all. You'd more likely be called a slob.

Indeed. Sometimes it is mind-blowing to know some English words with different meanings and that includes the need to learn the Parts of Speech of these words. Some non-native speakers will take it literally. That would be another story of learning the language. Moreover, sneakers are not really for this kind of occasion. I am sure the old folks will judge them as you mentioned, the slob.

I hate seeing men wearing sneakers on formal suits and slacks.

I don't think I have ever worn a pair of sneakers! The only time I wear shoes is when I go to the theatre otherwise it is sandals.
