My HVAC heater doesn't work

I have been living in this big old house all winter, and I have been using electric space heaters and a small wood stove to keep it warm. The house has an HVAC unit, but it requires propane and the tenant (me) has to supply the tank. Finally, I have a propane tank, and it is full of propane. Yesterday I fired up the heater, and it worked great. It was so nice having every room in the house the same comfortable temperature. Only a few hours later, the thermostat stopped working. Now, I am waiting for the repair man to come. Oh well, spring will be here soon. Good thing I have plenty of firewood.

I am not quite sure that sounds legal, to make you provide the propane tank, but with all the fires caused by space heaters, I am glad that at least for a short time you had it working.

I don't know where you live. I came from California, and I don't think you can rent a house there without heat, but things are different here in North Carolina. You can rent a house without a floor as long as the renter agrees to it. My space heaters are very safe. They are a lot more likely to not heat than to cause a fire. It is pretty expensive to heat the house with electric space heaters though.

I know how that feels. We bought a poorly maintained rental, with old fashioned gas wall heaters. We had not been able to get a plumber to come out for anything, until this year. He cleaned and serviced the heaters and I have actually been warm this winter, without the electric space heaters. It saved a lot of money. I hope yours is a simple fix. Have you tried removing the cover of the thermostat and blowing it out with canned air, or vacuuming it?

It's fixed. It was a bit more complex than anything I could handle though, and the landlady is paying for the repair.

We have floor heating through the house, but I have an extra electric space heater in the bathroom, I warm up a little more before taking my bath. Of course I turn it off before entering in the bath tub.
