The Final Update on My Ankle

I just came back from the ankle doctor and it turns out that I had a sprain, not any type of fracture. The fracture seen on the first set of xrays was from a previous injury that I never knew I had. My ankle is still a bit tender when pushed on, but otherwise in decent condition. I will be returning back to work on Friday. Originally I thought I'd start back today, but we have a window job for tomorrow and I have that financial class yet, so he wrote the slip so I can begin on Friday. He asked if I needed any restrictions, but since I've been walking around the house fine and since I did work the day of my fall without problems, I think I should be able to work my whole shift fine too. At least as far as my ankle is concerned. I'm sure after a few days my right knee will be sore from standing again. I will get paid for short-term disability for almost two weeks which should help our budget. I have to go pick those papers up tomorrow afternoon and take them to the secretary at work. And, I need to go back this afternoon to get fitted with an ankle brace. I will return in two weeks to check and see if the ankle is in tip, top shape. I'm leaving shortly to go visit my mom which I've not done since I fell. This means starting Friday, my time here will be more limited once again. See you all later today. Unless my mom is napping, then I might hang with you a bit. The picture is the waiting room at the ankle doctors.

Happy to see you mobile. Those injuries can be a long time healing but not always painful. Do take care and don't hurt it anymore. You will be as good as new in no time.

I've been mobile through the whole thing, just not working since having the xray. It healed up quite a bit already and maybe with the ankle brace on it will heal the rest of the way even with me working.

@mynameiskate I had swelling the first week and I've spent a lot of my days with my feet elevated for hours at a time. After that first week I've had no more swelling and I can extend and flex my foot more now than I could then also. I also quite needing any pain meds since the weekend and the pain was minimal even before then. If it had been worse I probably wouldn't have been able to work my eight hour shift the day that it happened.

@MarshaMusselman Do you find there is a little swelling around tissue and blood vessels. I think that signals go ahead and put your feet up. You can tell I am not your boss, right?

A sprained ankle is much better than a fractured tendon which is what we thought I had. I think most of the healing has taken place already with me being off work these past almost three weeks. The first few days back will be fun but I should be fine after that. My mom was still in bed when I got there. The last time that happened I was concerned because it's usually the residents that sleep all the time that don't last long, but they may have been waiting until hospice came to do her shower. I fed her lunch and she ate it all. Now, she'll be up in her recliner until supper time.

That makes sense why it healed so fast then since it wasn’t actually broken thankfully! Tomorrow’s already Friday so you will be back to work then.

@MarshaMusselman I think it was written bad as I am terrible with Grammer. I think it would have just made more sense if I said something like Friday is almost here already.

In other words, tomorrow is Friday, lol. Or, right now it's Friday, but when you wrote this five hours ago it wasn't yet Friday. Did your auto-correct take control?

@MarshaMusselman hope it goes ok - do you have the weekend off to relax the ankle again for a while?

@arthurchappell No, unfortunately. But, I have next Wed and Thursday off, so at least it may seem somewhat short even though it's really not. I will have off an additional three months come June when I get my other knee done and come April I can take off a few days here and there as my vacation days will be renewed by then. So there is that. Plus, I'm not cleaning windows on a regular basis yet, so I'll have a break from that until next month. That will give me time to recuperate fully.

I could have gone with restrictions or less hours to start with but I figure since I worked the same day I fell and my whole shift that I should be fine to work the whole thing now.

Good thing you have disability claims to get by. We don't have this, so when we get sick.. we are sick ... nothing to get .. so for now, Be well.

To get paid with disability I first have to opt for coverage and pray a small amount each week. I also have to be off work a week before they behind paying, so instead of getting there weeks paid it will be one week and three days, I think

@Mavic123456 Yes, pretty much. I also pay for long term disability, but I'll have to check whether that's a good investment or not. I just found out that it's in case a person needs to be off work over six months. I'd think if that happened it might just make sense to retire and be done with it, but I don't know. Plus, because of my age, I don't know if I could be forced to retire instead of claiming it or what exactly.

Not because of the sprain, no. It's the foot that I had the wound on and that has been slightly bruised for some reason but it's also healing and much better this week.

@Hate2Iron I was off work for eighteen days and the pain quit a week ago. How long did it take yours to heal when yours was sprained?

I've no idea if with a sprain the patient is recommended to have off work too or not.

It would be doing better if my knee waiting to be replaced was doing better. And my back is bad from limping for too long. But my ankle is doing great.

That is awesome to hear that your ankle is not fractured! And also great to hear that you are able to get up and about again! It will be nice to finally get back to your normal routine after two weeks of dealing with the injury.

Now that my foot is better my knee is bothering me again and I keep forgetting, when I'm home to look for where I our my knee brace. It's probably under stuff.

They say that sprains hurt more than a broken bone. Glad you are doing well and take it easy on that ankle when you can.

This sprain didn't hurt much at all. In fact, I almost wasn't even going to let the doctor know I fell. But, I've heard of people walking without taking care of things and then it messing up something later on. I didn't want that happening either. The area near my outer ankle bone swelled up for the first four or so days and then after that I've had no more swelling. I've spent the better part of many days in the recliner with my feet up. I'm not sure I'm going to like wearing the brace, but I will try. It probably won't be any worse than having to wear an unna boot or all the bandaging I've endured this past year.

Just checked to see if you had put up any new discussions. Saw you had liked a comment of mine so guessed you will be here. It's Monday morning here...I took leave today and am now cleaning up the house. Have a good evening....Have you gone on to season 3 of once upon a time? I have season 2 of the crown in my computer but yet to see.

Well that is all pretty good news except that you had previously fractured your ankle. I am sure you are glad to be able to get back to work and get full pay, I know that when hubs got disability it wasn't all that much.

It's about 70% of my gross. Better than nothing and better than using up my paid time off when I have that to use. I've no clue good old the fracture might be. I must but have been in any pain from that.

Working didn't bother my foot right after it happened. I'm sure I'll be fine especially if the brace isn't crazy tight.

I'm glad that the ankle isn't too bad and that you can return to work. You had a fracture before that you didn't know about? How can that happen?

It wasn't a fracture of any portion of the bone, I don't think, but rather a portion of either the tendon or ligament pulled away from the bone and left a little mark where that happened. Either it was small enough it didn't hurt, or maybe it happened when I fell on our ramp quite a few years ago when we got a hard frost and I didn't realize it until I fell. That time I fell similar to my most recent fall when one leg went in one direction and the other leg somewhere else. Possibly my knees were so bad that was all the pain I knew about. I was told, then, that I sprained my knees which I'd never heard of before that.

I'm just hoping that the knee waiting for the replacement can handle it better than it was before I fell. I think it was all the snow storms and weather fluctuations that were causing possibly fluid buildup above my knee. All I know is that it was quite puffy. Although, sometime mid Feb I also twisted my knee when I took a step and that may be why it seemed inflamed more than usual. I'm allowed to use a cane to help me walk back and forth to my lane if my knee gets overtired once again. I don't expect much of a problem for my foot although I might change my mind if I don't like the way the brace feels.
