CURFEW: “Is It NECESSARY?”

This morning, I brought my little niece to her school. Uncle’s duty is being activated. When I was going back home, I decided to walk. It is a part of my daily routine. As I enjoy the morning breeze, I saw this signage. It is a curfew time for youngsters that were implemented in my city. The issue circulates to old folks and claimed that it is like a sign of having ‘Martial Law’ during the time of the Marcos regime. Personally, I think it is fine to have this implementation to protect the young ones. We can never tell what will happen if they are outside at night. “Is there a curfew in your place?” “Do you think curfew violates the child’s rights?” © S. Gamboa 2019

No, there is not a curfew where I live, but the police surely would stop a minor alone during the night and call his parents to know if he/she is allowed to stay out alone.

@LadyDuck They do this border patrol if there is a special occasion here. Perhaps the local government doesn't have a budget for this.

Before this implementation, the barangay officials usually go around at night. In my own opinion, they can't do their job effectively. I guess it is better to have police patrol regularly here. However, I just have seen them at random at night.

I think so, because some parents are not good or don't care about parenting!

I also noticed that some parents are not good at raising their children. In this way, it can also make the young ones safe.

Curfews are necessary in certain circumstances but this one is unnecessary. What if a child gets injured or sick during that time?

That's what the local officials aim to secure the safeness of minor individuals. Do you have this kind of rule?

@Daljinder I agree. I had seen this before when living in a Muslim country. The young ones should be inside the house at night and not later than midnight. In my country, it adapted foreign cultures and some parents are quite lax about it. Personally, I am not into this kind of lifestyle.

@Shavkat No. It is common sense that people keep their children indoors during night. Any parent with half a decent parenting will ensure that their kids have finished their school work, had proper dinner, cleaned, changed and are tucked safely in bed at night. I don't see the need to specifically impose a curfew on kids at night.

@Shavkat I would say it depends on why there is a curfew in places. If to protect people then good and if not then bad. No, we have no curfew here for us.

None that I know of and there really should be more care here for people of that age. My kids have always complained about me telling them what time to come back but I bet they see the other side of it now specially now the older one is a Dad.

In my family, my biological parents had imposed this curfew especially when we were in teens. I don't feel bad about it. If they didn't do this, I am not sure if my siblings and I will be what we are now.

With society the way it is nowadays I think this is a good idea really. Hopefully it would prevent a lot of vandalism and gang violence.

I agree. I felt dismayed when seeing this along the road. Some young ones vandalized the wall of the house. © S. Gamboa 2019
