Microwaved Stories

It is amazing how many amusing tales I have about microwave cooking - seeing as I don't prefer it as a method of cooking. I got to thinking about this after discussion with @xander6464 - and thought I would share the fun (if that's what you call it?) with everyone else. ;-) For a period of many years, we didn't have a microwave - I think it was because we deemed them unhealthy. Either way, it was fine by me. I was comfortable cooking on a stove top. When we finally broke down and got one, it was like modern magic to me. While I don't prefer cooking anything complex in them, they can be a blessing when you want to thaw, heat up a vegetable or left overs, or even microwave popcorn which seemed like a real magic trick. Now growing up - my dad always made pan-fried popcorn which is still the best. Though, after we got the microwave - we got more into microwave popcorn which was just about as good. Seems like in the late 1990s and early 2000s there were more varieties available. I remember a wonderful "corn on the cob" flavor which is no longer for sale in this part of the world. Also I remember caramel and cheese corn. And there's where my first story begins. The cheese and caramel corn came with the bag of popcorn seeds , and a packet of oil mixed with the flavor that you would shake in the bag after the popcorn was done popping. It was really good, but like all microwave popcorn, seems to be gross when cold. So I thought I would reheat the cold half bag of cheese corn. Imagine my surprise when I started smelling burnt - and looked at the microwave and saw flames. I thought fast, opened the microwave, used a tongs and threw the burning bag in the sink. Another time, we had some banquet chicken. For those that don't know this is a frozen, boxed product of fried chicken. You put it in the microwave or oven and ta da - chicken at home. I wanted a piece - and seeing as we had the new microwave - I decided to heat up my chicken in the microwave. I read the back of the box. 12 minutes. Alright, great. Well, right around 5 minutes I thought it smelled rather well done. At 10 minutes there was literally a black spot of molten chicken and the microwave was full of smoke. I stopped it. Took the plate out. What had gone wrong? I hadn't even run it the full 12 minutes. I re-read the box. 12 minutes for the entire box of 12 pieces of chicken. I threw my molten chicken outside and it took forever for the microwave to stop smelling like burned chicken. My aunt's cabin had an old microwave in it. Seeing as - that seems to be what people do. The old furniture, appliances etc = as long as they still work - go to be used at the cabin. This thing was like 4 times the size of a modern day microwave. It had big dials on the front. I wouldn't doubt that there is some collector value to it. So those are my funny microwave stories. I would love to hear yours. Photo: Pixabay

I think I have done something similar to what you did with the chicken before, but can't exactly recall. I do like the microwave for some things, but it definitely is not for everything!

My husband cooked an egg in the microwave for our small son. He pierced the shell but didn't pierce the membrane round the yolk. It wasn't until the egg was placed in front of our son that it suddenly exploded. A different sort of egg on face.

@FayeHazel I think I lied. I think he boiled it normally then just wanted to cook it a tiny bit more so popped it in the microwave. The top would have been off.

Lol! That was most certainly a delayed reaction. Actually that's interesting. I didn't know one could cook an egg in a shell in the microwave. Learn something new every day

Oh, I had actually heard that - about microwaving the sponges after use. Oh no. That would have been scary and smell bad I imagine. I'm happy it was just the microwave and nothing else. That could have been bad.

@FayeHazel not only because of that, read this if you can
Microwave popcorn has been found to contain chemicals that are likely carcinogens, so it's better to pop your own popcorn on the stove and here's how.

My house is without a microwave for last six months after the last one broke. It was there for 12 years and we hardly used it. We never thought it to be healthy way of cooking and so never got used to it. Now we have yet not decided whether we need an OTG or a microwave. It doesn't seem like a hurry.

My only unusual experience was an egg exploding because I forgot to burst the yoke and didn't let it sit for a while before taking it out. Luckily it didnt hit me but the walls got a splattering. I prefer to only use a microwave when I really have to.

That was a bad thing for that chicken and pop corn. Want to hear something funny about microwave ovens? I was going to make a cup of coffee. Heat the water in the cup for about 3 minutes on high. I put the cup in the microwave, but forgot to fill it with water. When I took that empty cup out I put it in the sink and ran water in it. That cup broke up into a million separate pieces.

@FayeHazel , Well it was a Starbucks cup made of tempered glass. It cost me a good 20 bucks. I will never put a cup like that in the microwave unless I have the sense to fill it first with water. The time it takes to warm water hot enough for coffee or tea is about 3 minutes using regular tap water, but 4 minutes if it is cold water from the refrigerator. No longer than that.

@FayeHazel , Here is a link to a YouTube on cooking bacon. It seems that the best way to cook bacon is to first broil the bacon for a little bit then microwave it before putting it in the frying pan. Who would have thought?
From the method you're using to cook it, to the kind of pan you use and how hot it is, there are all kinds of ways you could be doing your favorite breakfast...

We have a microwave in both houses and both are used for softening dark brown sugar, ice cream, and baking potatoes when in a hurry.

@FayeHazel Sometimes we reheat food in the microwave, but not often. It does work miracles on brown sugar, but only do a few seconds at a time.

Those are funny stories about your microwave experiences. Some people still prefer ovens to microwave. I love my microwave. It's used almost daily. I don't have any funny stories. I did learn you don't put styrofoam in the microwave. Talk about a meltdown.

@FayeHazel No. It doesn't melt as in getting all over everything, but as in just disintegrating to nothing. It was the mess from what was cooked that was 'fun' to clean up.
