Chopped it off myself

Yesterday I got the bug. The "cutting off all my hair bug." Some of you may remember me telling you that I haven't cut my hair in years. I've trimmed it myself, but I haven't gotten it cut in years. It was down to my hips just yesterday. Well, yesterday I had enough. I said "Enough is enough, I need to cut my hair!" and so I did. I went to the bathroom with my hair brush and a good pair of scissors. I looked for our hair cutting shears but couldn't find them. I put my hair in two parts over my shoulder (in front of me) and brushed it out nicely. Then I cut one side, brushed the other side and cut it to match. I had to do a little trimming here and there, but I like it. It's lighter and easier to brush now. I won't have to use as much shampoo and conditioner, and more importantly, I can finally get some henna and dye it. I get hot pretty easily and so I won't have to worry about that as much this summer. Have you ever cut your own hair?

How much did you cut off? I used to cut my hair all the time when it was long.

@simone10 This is true, but I haven't been to a regular barber in years, despite saying "I will go" I've donated to Locks Of Love in the past though.

It went from my waist to just above my shoulder blades.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That would have been a good length to give to something like Locks of Love.

I want to see a picture of your hair. I have a question on the henna hair color I remember you saying it is a natural product what do you mix it with?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Wow did not know what it was mixed with after I heard another lady in Sally’s beauty supply talk about it and you I might just have to try it out. Nice cut job I like it

@Tina30219 Thank You. I get my henna from etsy but you can probably get it at any natural beauty place, and maybe even sally's? Henna sellers have different types. They all have the plain henna, but some add natural red dye, brown dye, blond dye etc. I usually go for the type that adds the red dye in. I think regular henna is going to give your hair a reddish tint anyway, but I like the added stuff because I like my red to be bright. I don't know where the pictures of the last time I dyed with henna are, or I'd show you.

Forgive the picture, I'm lounging in my pajamas since I'm not feeling too good. I don't remember what I mixed with mine. I know some mix with conditioner, other with ACV, I think even some use Olive Oil.

@scarlet_woman It just got too annoying for me to manage. Ideally, I would have liked to let it grow to my knees before cutting it, but oh well.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It must take forever to get dry.

Mine is thinner than it once was. I was shedding like a dog when I had my hair so long. I don't mind thinner hair, I just don't want to go bald.

@snowy22315 It did take awhile to get dry. I usually helped it along in the colder months. I would wring my hair out a bit before stepping out of the shower, and then brush it through and use the hair dryer on it. I didn't like to stand there drying it all thoroughly, so I did a thorough enough job that it dried fairly quickly after that.

Well done, I cut my hair since 1999, I had enough to go to see my hairdresser every two weeks, my hair grows terribly fast.

I haven't regularly been to the barber shop since my school age. Even then, I think I stopped going regularly in high school. My sister cut my hair for awhile. I remember that I cut my hair when I was living with my ex once, my mother in law found out about it and you would have thought I'd told her I went streaking down the road!

@LadyDuck Mow there are hair cutting tools that supposedly make the job easier. I think I'll continue to cut my own hair. I think I will trim it every few months while the temperature is warm.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I used to go once a month when we lived in Monte Carlo. When my hairdresser moved to another place I was not very happy with the new one and I tried to cut myself. After a few failure I got the habit and I never went back to the hair salon.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Sounds very interesting how you cut your hair. So, do you feel better that you cut it?

Yes, as I said, I feel lighter. It's easier to manage as well. I used to have to run a brush through it every time I thought of it or else I'd get knots and tangles. Now I can brush my hair in a few minutes and be done with it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I can see that. That was very long hair. I bet in the winter it was nice and warm but in the summer it would be too hot to have hair that long.

@Hannihar Yes, in the winter it was fine. My bedroom is warmer than the rest of the house, I can't get it to stay the same temps as the other parts of the house. In the summer that means I have to keep fans on me. With my hair cut, I should be able to get away with having the fans off for most of the summer.

When I kept my hair long, I did cut it myself. Once I even cut it really short by myself. My first husband was a trucker and when he came home he helped even it out a bit is all. People would walk around me trying to figure out where I put my hair. I told them that was the hazard of me being home at two in the morning with scissors.

I think every time I've cut my own hair it's been a spur of the moment thing. No one seemed to notice my drastic cut, but then they've mostly seen me in hooded sweatshirts which hides my hair.

I bought a hair guide thingy online and its great for cutting hair in a straight line. I do mine and my grandkids with it and g to a hairdressers rarely. I don't dye my hair any more but I used to so our hairdresser bills are very low.

I've seen a tool for cutting hair as well. I thought about getting it, and might still one day. I don't dye my hair as often as I once did. I used to keep it a red color or a dark blonde.

You know... I have been thinking the same thing and I don't even need to do it myself!! My son in a stylist! Just don't know if I want to do it! Mine is no where as long as yours was but long enough to wear in a long braid!

That's what I used to do, braid it. I'd shampoo and condition it then brush it out, part it and braid pig tails. It was comfortable to sleep in that way. Then I just stopped doing it. I am so indecisive about my hair. I've said for three or four years that I'd get it cut, and other than trimming it myself, I'd never gone so drastic.
