Does love hurt?

After reading a discussion on love on myLot, the song "Love Hurts" came into my head. It raises the questions: Does love really hurt? Can love really hurt or does it only hurt because that kind of love was never the right kind of love? I'm going to take the side that real, deep and genuine love can only hurt temporarily but ultimately it will heal us and make us a better person. So, real, deep and genuine love can't really hurt us and in time, in the long run, real love is healing and it will leave no pain, no hurt and no scars! What do you think?

No. No love should hurt. If someone tells you they love you but hurts you with lies, beatings or abuse, that is not love. That is a bad relationship and no one, I mean no one should have to live like that, even if they "think" its love.

I gre with you, that is not love and we actually feel better and are better off when such people are out of our lives.

Everyone hurts at some point in some way in their lives, but I'd have to say love itself shouldn't hurt. Real love is trusting that healing is always possible and that it will happen.

That's what I was thinking too! If a love hurts then it was not love and there is no need to let them hurt us. We are better off without them.

@1hopefulman If you love and you are loved there is no place to pain, there is something wrong if one of the two feels hurt.

@1hopefulman of course sometimes we have our issues like any other couple but we could never do something that may hurt the other. We are together for life and we must love and respect each other.

That may be so! I have always appreciated the old saying that it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. So, even the relationships that hurt when they ended fill me with pleasant memories that can never be taken away from me.

That is exactly the point that I'm trying to make. When someone hurts another person, it is not because they love the person that they hurt them. I was married twice and I can tell you that neither marriage broke up because they loved me so much. Neither said to me,"Honey, I love you so much and so I slept with another man because I love you more than I can say." Yes, I can laugh about it!

No i dont think it does. I used to but when I actually think about it no. Love doesn't hurt it heals and makes you feel safe things that come along with relationships hurt like trust issues, disagreements, break ups etc but its the side things that hurt its not the love that hurts

I share some of your thoughts! When love develops trust issues, when there are unpleasant disagreements and when there are breakups, that is no longer love. Love is like a warm coat on a cold day. Love is like the pleasant sun on one's face. Love heals the pain and not causes the pain.

I used to listen to Roy Orbison, listening now. What I get from the song is in the first few lines "..any heart not tough or strong enough.." says to me if we love someone we will endure any pain from life connected with that person because we do love them. "It holds a lot of rain.." and so does life. And "..love is like a stove; burns you when it is hot..". Some say they love someone but not strong and break up at the first obstacle. The love here being described will endure regardless of what comes next?

I don't agree with the song. Love doesn't hurt, it is a blessing no matter what the other person does. However, if someone hurts us then that is not love.

@1hopefulman You don't need to agree. It is only one persons experience with love, the writer expresses what he feels and like all artistic works open to our own interpretation. Someone else might listen to the song and get a different meaning.

So true, love is healing and it is hatred that hurts us and that's why Jesus commanded us to love our neighbour and even our enemies.

I think love has the potential for hurting. Not only if they don't return your love, or if they leave you. Also when you love someone, you feel their pain. When something bad happens to them, it hurts you too.

I understand that point of view. I'm looking at love from a different perspective. In each situation that you describe, I don't view that it is "Love" that hurts but something else is causing the pain. "Not only if they don't return your love" I see that it is that they don't return the love that hurts and not love itself.

This is love we crave!! But it can only last a while!! Sometimes a long while and sometimes a short while!! But one thing is certain, never let it drive you crazy and when it fades don't go crazy!!! It will sprout again like flowers in the spring!!

It is a good question. I can't think of any humans who love each other who haven't at least occasionally hurt each other. Though God's love is perfect. But even God gave us his son on the cross. As a bit of trivia - Roy Orbison did a cover of "Love Hurts" too. I guess the song was originally by the Everly Brothers

Yes, I think that The Everly Brothers were the first to record that song. Yes, but when two people who love each other say or do something that hurts, is it love that hurts or what they said or did that hurts?

@1hopefulman Good question. Even if they weren't in love - the hurtful thing would probably still be painful. But I think there is extra pain when the subject is in love with the person saying or doing the thign

Love is a choice. It's a very positive thing to be in love. Being able to find someone who attracts you not in just a physical sense but in a personal one as well. You don't feel any physical pain when your in love or lose love. You just feel empty like you lost something valuable to you. No scars are left on the outside but they can remain on the inside the same as when you are unloved. Those scars can heal in time or not depending on the individual.

@1hopefulman What else could it be? The feeling we have in our hearts for another person. Our hearts get broken, and that is painful. All because we love someone.
