Here is a picture of the tuner case I'm working on. In this photo, all missing veneer is replaced and all surfaces are completely sanded down. Watco Walnut Danish Oil will be the next step, as per the owner's request. I'll write more later. I'm just on a quick break from work. Bottom line: This is what dark walnut looks like when it is dry and unoiled.

I have seen unfinished dark walnut before, it's a wood I like.

I like it too. More guitar companies are using it now as mahogany and rosewood become rare. I'll have to play one and see what walnut SOUNDS like.

@TheHorse I imagine that every wood has a different sound. Mahogany is surely becoming rare.

@LadyDuck Yes, there are endless discussions of the sounds of various woods out there in guitar nerd internet land. I like mahogany because it's less "boomy" than rosewood. I haven't really tried walnut.

I've seen dry, unfinished dark walnut before. I think one of my brothers liberated an old desk from someone's garbage pile and refinished it. The end product was beautiful.

Walnut is a lovely wood.It got too expensive for speaker manufacturers to use in the late 1970s. But now, rosewood and mahogany are getting too expensive/rare for guitar makers to use, so some are switching to...walnut!

@SophiaMorros Hmm. Is the Mississippi river involved?

@TheHorse you just reminded me of a YA novel called Swift Rivers by Cornelia Miegs. It's about a teenager and his plan to get timber (including the king if walnut trees) from Minnesota down to New Orleans. It's a good coming of age yarn.
