About That Honesty Policy.....

Now that the final house payment has been made I can put those megabucks (that's a joke, my mortgage was less than $350 a month) toward other things in the house. One of the things I've been putting off is a new furnace and/or air conditioner. The other day a company came out and gave me a quote for over 12K (yes, that's twelve thousand dollars) for a new HVAC system and water heater. Today another company came by for an inspection and bid. Their representative told me a few things, point blank: * The furnace may be 18 years old but it's still in good working condition. * The AC is in pristine condition and wouldn't need replacement for at least another ten years. * The price would be about $2,700 for the furnace. Honesty is the best policy. I don't have to get a new HVAC system now, so I'm not going to. (In the words of the technician who was here today, "save that money and go on a vacation!") But when that time does come, I'll bet you know which company I'll be calling..... The Singing Cowboy puts it bluntly:

Cheaper isn't always better; however, neither is the most expensive the best. In this case, the $12,000 quote included an Amana furnace. I always thought of them as stoves and microwaves! In contrast, the $2,700 furnace would be a Trane, which is one of the standard brands in the furnace industry.

There's a sucker born every minute. We just have to try to make sure we aren't one of them. It sure pays to get a few bids on a high-ticket item like that.

Some companies are just out there to make a buck and don't care about the customer at all. It's a shame, really.

I once had this electrician tell me $5,000 to rewire a house. Ahhhh, No! I called another and it was $1,500, I even called a third and they were about the same as the $1,500 guy.
