Old Farmhouse Speaks to My Soul

United States

Yesterday, my husband and I visited an old farmhouse that was built in 1900. The set-up was quite different from a standard home. There were so many rooms to see. We called it the maze house. There was a huge room downstairs that had a fireplace and large windows that overlooked the backyard. The backyard was quite big too. There is a stream, wooded area, and a pond. Considering this is an 8 acre lot, there is plenty of space to build a barn and have some farm animals. Also there is a great spot for us to plant a vegetable garden. There are trees that line the front yard to keep the place private from the road. Love that too. There is plenty of space for my perennial gardens too. Of course with a house that is older, there are some things that need to be fixed. My husband is up for the task. He is very excited about it. My brother also said he would assist with the needed renovations. Now all we need to do is get financing. I'm calling the bank today. Wish us luck!!

Its great that you found a home that you both like so much. Its so important to consider both the home as well as the yard and both of their potential, which it sounds like you've done. I'm surprised that your banks are open today, its a statutory holiday here in Canada. Good luck, I hope that everything goes smoothly and positively.

There was a time when the banks were closed as well as schools. However, times have changed. We do love this house. It has a lot of potential and speaks to us. Felt like "home."

I keep envisioning how I will set up each room. The broker called and said that there were 6 offers on the home already and because each was under the asking price the seller denied them. Not sure how much of that is really true though. I believe the broker would try to get as much for the home as possible so their share of the deal would be more too.

@ElusiveButterfly Your broker is most likely right. Our son bought a house last August and every house he looked at went above asking price or was paid for in cash. And all the houses were in the million dollar range. The only way he got his home was because the other couple couldn’t obtain a mortgage. He was preapproved, too.

@ElusiveButterfly The broker is telling the truth. Every house our son looked at went above asking price.
