You Have GOT to Be Excrementing Me

There's another reason to hate the New York Yankees: they've banned Kate Smith's "God Bless America." Add to that the Philadelphia Flyers, who not only stopped playing the song, they removed a statue of Kate Smith from the grounds of their arena. And why, you might ask, is this legendary, iconic song, and to me the iconic rendition, being removed? Because people who probably weren't even alive when Kate Smith died in 1986 are having a hissy fit over a song she recorded in 1931. I've said this before, but it needs to be repeated: we cannot impose 21st-century morality on the past. The song in question, "That's Why D*rkies Were Born," was recorded in 1931, when "d*rkies" was a common term in popular culture. In fact, if you listen to a lot of modern covers of old folk or country songs, there's a code you'll find: most times you hear "old folks" it's a modern update of the lyrics that originally said "d*rkies." (Examples: "Where the Old Red River Flows" and "Kentucky.") Let's extend this, too: speaking of Kentucky, our "official" state song is Stephen Foster's "My Old Kentucky Home." The original opening line? "The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home, 'tis summer, the d*rkies are gay." The other state song that Foster wrote, "Old Folks At Home" (or "Swanee River") also originally had the "D" word in it. So Kentucky and Florida need to replace their state songs? And we need to remove any statues of Foster? (EDIT: Right after I wrote that last line I did a search. The city of Pittsburgh did remove a statue of their native son!!) And why is the late Ms. Smith taking the brunt of the hostility? She didn't write the song. it was written by Ray Henderson and Lew Brown, who wrote (together or separately) other, far better-known songs such as "Has Anybody Seen My Gal," "I'm Sitting on Top of the World," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," "The Birth of the Blues," and "The Best Thing in Life Are Free." So now I guess we have to remove "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" from the Grammy Hall of Fame, right? There's a meme on Facebook that has an iconic pose of Jackie Gleason with his arms extended. The caption reads, "Good morning, America! WHAT are we offended by today?" No kidding. Removing a song because of an 88-year-old recording that most of the complaining people have never heard? You have got to be (excrementing) me! Sing it, Kate:
In 1938, the biggest star on radio, Kate Smith, asked composer Irving Berlin...more..http://www.quotationmotivation.com

This is the most absurd PC move yet. Is that all someone has to do but search ancient songs to find something objectionable? This song was a Broadway hit show tune from George White's Scandals she recorded. That's all. And she's a racist? She must be since she also recorded Pickaninny Heaven. But what about revered Communist African American icon Paul Robeson who ALSO recorded the song? And famed bandleader Paul Whiteman who recorded the song? And Groucho Marx who uses that quote in "Duck Soup"? And Randy Newman who recorded Underneath the Harlem Moon which contains that line as a lyric? Obviously all racists who need to be banned immediately.

@TheHorse It is more than silly. This is racism under cover. to me. When you look at everything with a magnifying glass, you have a problem.

that is going overboard. I agree with taking down the Confederate memorials but banning this song just seems absurd.

I don't agree with taking down Confederate memorials. Are you aware that Robert E. Lee was against slavery and said that God would end it at the proper time? And that he fought along side of Ulysses Grant in a previous war and thought of fighting for the North until they invaded his native state of Virginia?

@TheHorse saying "God would end it at the proper time" is an ignorant excuse by Lee. I am not an expert on the Civil War but I don't think that those who supported the side fighting for slavery should be set up as heroes.

@NJChicaa Maybe we should ban statues of Abe Lincoln. He supported Abolition partly for political reasons.

I'm a bleeding heart Liberal but I think that PC has been crazy for years. Heck, maybe *I* should be banned and all statues of me removed. I sing a Bob Wills nonsense song Take Me Back to Tulsa) that used to have "d*rkies" in it. Interestingly, the line is a pro-black political statement, as it makes it clear that black Americans were being treated unfairly when it was written. Here's the summary from Wikipedia: The song is a series of unrelated, mostly nonsense, rhyming couplets, i.e.: Little bee sucks the blossom, big bee gets the honey. D*rkie picks the cotton, white man gets the money. Modern covers of the song, in order to avoid racial offense, tend to replace above line with: Poor boy picks the cotton, Rich man gets the money.

The thing that bothers me the most about this is that the people raising the stink are almost making fun of the real civil rights struggles in the 50s and 60s. Jesse Owens was the star at the 1936 Olympics, but he came home to segregation. A song using "d*rkies" in a time that it was socially acceptable doesn't compare to the water cannons, the "whites only" signs, and the three murdered civil rights workers in Mississippi.

@TheHorse —yes, Jesse Owens. They just had Jackie Robinson day in MLB. I’ll correct it.

@FourWalls You mean Jessie Owens, right? He ran right by those German runners. Jackie Robinson integrated baseball (my game) in the 1940s.

That is just so absulutely stupid. Honestly, it's hard to believe people can be so daft. It was a completely different era back then.

Yes, it was. For better or for worse, it was different. And, as I said, we cannot impose 2019 standards on 1919 material.

I hadn't heard about this. So, they want to ban it because she sang some other song they didn't like? One of the few things I remember about my dad is that he didn't like the Yankees. Why? because as a Louisiana boy, he didn't couldn't abide Yankees.

Right. She did a lyrically insensitive song — by today’s standards — in 1931.

I'm sick of political correctness, it has become the major part of dumbing down America. I can't wait until future generations begin removing those things they find offensive from these people. I can't even watch the Flyers anymore. Totally stupid and unacceptable.
