Week Three: Flash-Bandit's Adventure Continues

My apologies for the blurry map image. After this week I'll focus on smaller sections (the map is so small I go cross-eyed trying to read the names of the various shelters).

My trail-hiking son didn’t send a text message yesterday to update his location “because he couldn’t get a cell signal at the hostel.” He did, however, have WiFi access and I was able to confirm his location based on his Facebook account (it seems the fact that he could message me using Facebook completely slipped his mind). For those who haven’t read my previous updates. The yellow pins in the map indicate where we dropped him off and then where we met him two weeks into his journey. The top green pin was his starting location and the white pin further up the map is his goal for this week. The plan is for me to meet him at that point on Friday to help him and his trail buddies to resupply and to take some of his cold weather gear off his hands (now that he’s through the Smokies he likely won’t see snow again and hopefully won’t be dealing with as much rain). There are some significant gaps between the green pins this week. That is not an indication that he has been making significantly greater daily distances (though he has) instead it is simply the result of inconsistent cell phone coverage. I only put green pins in my map when I get an actual location update from him. I think it’s safe to say that he still has many miles to go.

@SophiaMorros Three days seem so long when you are waiting for news.

So far we haven't gone more than about 3 days without hearing from him.

@LadyDuck It does seem long at times. I'm looking forward to seeing him at least briefly on Friday.

I'm not looking forward to him hitting Maine. There is NO cell service at all along the almost 300 miles of trail and I won't be close enough to meet up with him like I can on the stretch he's hiking now.

He's doing quite well on his journey. I'm sure you will see a very tired guy come the end of the trip, and hopefully one that will appreciate the warmth of a soft bed at the end of his days.

I have been surprised by the number of retirees (pensioners on your side of the ocean) who are thru-hiking the trail. There is a 63-year-old man who began the trail two days before my son did and so far has managed to maintain a solid two-day lead. I look for my son to overtake him in the next two weeks. But at the rate this gentleman is hiking it might not happen.

Good for your son. I'm sure he was pleased to see the last of the snow.
