Have you met the queen?

A post by @Gillygirl just made me think of this. No-one has ever asked me if I’ve met the queen – and I haven’t – but a surprising number of my friends have met various members of the Royal family. My college flatmate (a born Scouser like yourself @Gillygirl) went to one of the Queen’s garden parties, as a guest of her sister, who works at the Houses of Parliament. Another university friend and his wife also went to another one. One of my work colleagues met the Queen in some informal situation – can’t remember what now, but they chatted about animals and he had a lift in her Land Rover. Another met Prince Philip, who was patron of the charity that funded his research. Another friend joined the army and was in the same training unit as Prince Harry. Meanwhile our village choir master was awarded the MBE for his musical work. So, have any of you met the Queen? Or the head of state of your country? All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2019. @Fleura I always forget that Switzerland does not have one President, there are 7 members and I only know the names of a few of them, I remember Ignazio Cassis and Simonetta Sommaruga because they are Swiss/Italian.

Funny isn't it - I had to look it up as well. Switzerland is obviously a peaceful country and not in the news much. If there are many news stories about a country, that means it's not such a good situation!

I don't believe that I have ever been asked whether I have met the Queen. I would probably laugh heartily and say "Of course not!". In fact, though, I see her almost every day and even stroke her cheek and muss her hair! That is because, of course, I handle our coinage and stick her royal image on nearly every letter and parcel I send. All in all, I seem to have kept myself pretty aloof from any contact with royalty, even second-hand contact through friends and relations. I can't boast of any friendships like yours, though perhaps that is simply because I haven't asked. I have, however, met (and sold books to) St Andrew when I worked in a second-hand bookshop in Cambridge. He was a not infrequent visitor and seemed a perfectly ordinary person with no beard and a good upper-class accent. I can't remember what books he bought but they weren't about the Church or religion, I am fairly certain. He always paid by cheque and always signed them "St Andrrew" (which is how I know who he was). His full name (I have just looked him up) is George Philip Nicholas Windsor, Earl of St Andrews and he was born in 1962, so must have been up at Downing College in the mid '80s, when I met him. Being the son of the Duke of Kent, and a Windsor, I suppose that he is therefore 'royalty' (though very far down in the line of succession). I think that I would really class him as 'nobility'. Anyway, he was a very pleasant chap and always very friendly and chatty, as, of course, were many of our customers.

Yes I think nobility is a good term for those relations. Sounds like a nice chap. I think you often meet nice people in bookshops : )

@Fleura Oh yes I was able to see right into her car and she was wearing a sort of Coronation Dress best way I can describe it really and she was looking up at us too very intently.

Those who met the Queen definitely feel honoured ! I have met none of our government leaders in person so far.

I guess China is a much larger area for the head of state to cover. I almost saw the Chinese President when he visited here - at least I saw his car!

I saw her once, from a distance of three or four metres. And Philip. I was of the understanding that an invite to the Garden Parties didn't automatically mean you'd actually get to talk to, or even see the queen. Don't thousands of people get invited?! When William was working for the East Anglia Air Ambulance I used to think how cool it would be to be involved in an accident or emergency which warranted being flown by him in his helicopter!

Yes a lot of people do get invited; I'm starting to feel left out! Glad you were not keen enough to have an 'accident' on purpose so as to get recued by HRH!

I have not and it does not make a big deal for me. I have been awarded as a student by few famous people who were the guest of honor at our school and college function. I got a chance to see our late PM Vajpayeeji when in college. He came to address students on completion of 100 glorious years of the institute. When Stephen Hawkins came to India, we were lucky to be a part of his lecture and to attend a dinner party as pupil of Science with him. Those were few memorable moments.

@Fleura Even I look and cherish those moments. Especially the dinner and talk of Stephen Hawkins. Now we realize that we were a part of some proud History.

I've seen the Queen close -up on many occasions at the races, and I've met Princess Anne and chatted to her at a horse-related charity event.

Apparently I was taken to see Prince Charles at some function when I was little, but I was too small to remember it.
