Not sure of my feelings...

Yesterday I went to visit one of my grandaunt. She is younger sister of my paternal grandfather. She is 96 years old now and is bed ridden from this March.
She had a fall in bathroom and fractured her hips. That made her confined to bed.
Now I would tell a little about this grandaunt of mine who has been my favorite and I was always her favorite pet since childhood
. A graceful and well educated lady.. She was much progressive and ahead of her times.
Standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall and fair, she had an attractive personality. I feel good when I get compliments that I inherited my height and looks from her. And it's her attitude and positivity that has always inspired everyone around her.
She has lead an active and productive life till 96. She worked as a teacher and then later got into social work which kept her active till this unfortunate fall.
Even when bed ridden, she keeps herself busy with reading and needle work. She still has a charisma which is infectious.
She has been a very good friend to my mom and a big support to her through all ups and downs.
I and my mom went to see her yesterday. We spent whole afternoon with her and left late night after dinner.
My daughters were glad to meet her and felt very inspired by her talks. She is a true inspiration and a personification of women empowerment.
Her physical health has detoriated and she looked frail. But her mental spirit and memory was intact. We could chat on every topic under the sun.. Politics, books, current affairs and she could entertain my teenagers too. I was glad that her wit and memory is still intact.
She was a perfect host. Though on bed, she took care of everything with command. All dishes were made according to my taste and choice.
She lost her husband last year. And so she now feels lonely.
I had a good time with her. My children too will have fond memories of her.
While leaving her, I felt choked. A sudden fear struck me. This might be the last time I am seeing her. I gave her a long and tight hug.
I am not sure till now about my feelings. I am having moist eyes thinking of her. I am glad that she lived a fulfilling life till 96 but still... I want to see her in the same spirit when I visit my native next year..

I am so sorry she is now obliged to stay in bed. My mom had a stroke when she was 97, she has always been an active woman. After the stroke she was paralyzed, she could not even eat and drink. She did not want to live anymore, I was so sad to see her becoming so frail and to see her go.

Yes. It is sad to see someone who has lived so long independent and so disciplined with her lifestyle. She is still active. She is spending her time in bed reading a lot and even some writing and needle work. Amazing to see her doing good with her eyesight at that age. She needs only reading glasses.

@arunima25 It is good that she has a lot of visitors. They will give her much stimulation rather than being all alone all the time.

She is an amazing one and she has so many admirers. She has done so much for downtrodden women and children of tribes in Ranchi. No wonder, she has so many visitors and well wishers around her all the time.

Frankly my eyes become teary on reading your post. I could understand how you would have felt on leaving her. Life will not stop there for any one. I wish her speedy recovery and I am sure she will regain her physical health with her mental strength.

I hope too.. If she is active and back on her feet, her engagement will keep her happy. But at this age such fast healing would be a miracle to ask for.

I am sure this is common to most of us, people we admire, we want them to be with us forever. But sadly this isn't possible.
Reading about how she has lived and how she is still full of charisma and enthusiasm, I really inspired. Wish I would keep that up as well.

Not every grand aunt would have a person like you to show their affection. She is lucky.

Thank you for your kind words and wishes. I would love to have her around but I would never want her to suffer from any pain. She has lived a life of dignity and I would like her to have a peaceful end.

Falling is a major problem for us old folks--plus breaking hips--not good news!

Yes. Falling gets quite common with old age due to various reasons like Blood Pressure Or unsteady walk. For her it was none but just an accident where she slipped. But yes the age is a big hindrance to fast healing.
