The Worst Neighbor We Ever Had

Canada
May 6, 2019 9:29am CST
I enjoyed "@VivaLaDani13" post of noisy neighbors and it reminded me of our first home when we married 51 years ago... If I already told this story here on Mylot, I apologize. I looked for it and I couldn't find it. My husband had a job in Manhattan, Kansas. We were just married...We found a new apartment complex (a small one) only two floors. Our was on the top. There must have been around sixty apartments, One bedroom, bathroom, a tiny corner for a table and chairs, a tiny kitchen, and a sorta big for the two of us living room plus a deck. It was new, clean, had two pools and across the road was a grocery and other stores. We had some interesting neighbors in the complex and enjoyed most of them. Then a nasty biker and his wife moved in under us. The noise was awful, hard rock as loud as it could be, screaming at each other and it went on day and night. On day two we asked them if they could quiet down so we could sleep. They took offense of that question and got louder AND they moved their bike into the apartment and rived it up to show us just how loud they could be. It was after dark. My husband walked to the landlord who took care of the complex and he walked back with him and turned around to call the police. (this was before cell phone). He then came back and told the couple they needed to leave immediately. The neighbor stated to yell at the landlord and the police showed up and every thing got quiet. The couple were moved out and told not to come back... They were scary neighbors. The next day we found a beautiful house for rent to anyone with no children so we got it. It was beautiful and we lived there for a couple years until we moved on to a new job. We rented for years because we moved a lot. About 12 years ago we bought our forever house. We are retired - sort off... Its amazing what you gather when you don't move almost every year...

That's why I would harte living in an apartment - too close to other people. Glad you were able to get rid of that horrible couple.

We stopped living in an apartment because it was too close to other people. We moved a lot because my husband was working on getting bigger jobs every move and more money every move. We rented until I put my feet down and said I'm not moving again. Our kids were in collage and I wanted to stay where we were and so glad we did it...He had his work and I have my art. He still works but only on the radio instead of being on the football field...life is good!

What nasty obnoxious people they were and worse it was intentional. I am glad your husband dealth with it. Great about your forever house. You are not wrong there about the stuff we accumulate over the years, I have taken recently to being quite harsh in getting rid of stuff because like you we want to downsize. My wife on the other hand does not want to get rid anything!

That does sound like awful neighbors. Anyone living in that apartment would have been happy they were gone. I cannot even imagine thinking it is okay to take a bike inside and rev it up. What rotten people.

@PainsOnSlate renting a house is usually more costly but then you don't have to worry's about the people living above you or below you being noisy. Then you just have to deal with houses nearby being that way. None of my neighbors bother me to much luckily.

@shaggin I liked all the houses we lived in, neighbours never bothered us and were friendly, thinking of Missouri we bought a house there, brand new never used and it had no grass, we got grass almost the time we sold it and went back to Kansas... silly to buy untll you know your going to stay for a while. We moved so much I lost count, my husband was a college coach and every time there was a chance for a bigger school and more money we did it....While in Canada he wanted me and the kids to move with him to Montreal for a better job and I said NO...the kids were in high school and I didn't want to move them again. He went but came home often and eventually moved back...with a better job right back here...

They did it just to make us mad and it worked, they and their motorcycle were removed that night. We were newly weds and thought an apartment would work but we started looking for rental Homes - real houses and found one. We moved all over Kansas and Missouri and we rented houses instead of apartments until we decided to stay in one place. We bought our forever house when we knew we were not moving again...here in Canada. My husband was a football coach in the states (college football), we came to Canada because it was the pros.

I have been there. Apartments can be a pain. I am glad that you found a house to rent. I am thankful that where I live they are 4 plexes. All on ground level and pretty good neighbors.

I hope all your neighbours continue to be good ones. I've always loved Colorado, but never had the chance to live there. While living in Kansas we often went to Colorado to ski. That made snow a happy place.

Pratt, Ks, - that might be it, I can't think of any other... we also lived in Missouri just across the border (Joplin) from Kansas...We left Kansas to move to Canada, we really like it here....and we don't move anymore..

Yah we only rented one apartment and we stayed for 5 years. We loved it and our neighbors. Then we bought the house we live in now and have been here more than 45 years. We have had our cottage for 17 years and our Florida home for 6. We don't move much.

@BelleStarr I can understand that but for us, we talked about it and planned. I was ok with the moves knowing he would do his best to get where he needed to be. Moving was really interesting, each new town was an adventure and we met a lot of interesting people on the way. (Many of them still are friends and we talk on the phone or they visit us here in Canada) The kids liked the moves too and seeing other areas, but I put my foot down when the kids started junior high and high school ( but by then we were in Canada and knew we were staying here forever). My parents were just like you but they visited us at many of our "new homes" but they loved traveling anyway. We would take the kids and visit our parents for Christmas, both families one in NY and the other in Mass. But now I have put down roots.

I couldn't tell you how many times we moved with our children as my husband was building his history. We lived in Kansas and Missouri and one other state I can't remember, he was coaching first in high school and soon after that it was collage and then the pros... The pros were in Canada and the reason we are here. We finally about 10 years ago bought the house we live in now but the kids had already had gone on their own after collage. The hubs retired from coaching and started doing Football on the radio....Back then he traveled with the team and did the radio live. Now, no travel except when the team plays in town, if the weather is good, he goes. If it's pouring he watches it on the TV and does the radio on the phone....Magic things can be done at home now....

We lived in Monte Carlo in an apartment during 30 years, but we had very polite and good neighbors, we never had problems. I am anyway happy to live now in an individual home.

That biker made us decide to live in a home and we have always been doing that where ever we moved too... we rented them until we knew we were staying here for ever... We are enjoying our own home in our old age.

@PainsOnSlate In Monte Carlo individual homes do not exist, may be two or three, but if you are not the Prince or one of his family, you cannot afford to buy/rent one. We had to stay in an apartment until we lived there.

@LadyDuck we started our life together by living all over the state of Kansas, for some reason there were a lot of houses for rent. We rented in Missouri and in Indiana, when we got to Canada they were everywhere. I've never been in Monte Carlo but I'm guessing the lack of homes in that city was because the age of the city and the number of people living there. The USA and Canada is a baby compared to Europe. Interesting about the lack of homes, I had no idea they could be not around.

Your husband did the right thing, called the police. I surely wouldn't want them to be our neighbor. When our neighbor sometimes had videoke during a birthday party, I usually text the wife to please lower down or stop the viedoke already when it's time to sleep already. So far, they are kind and stop.

He brought the man who took care of the apartments so he could see the stupidity for himself and he was the one who called the cops. Thankfully they were gone in a matter of a few hours. I think normal people would be kind, these idiots living below us were not normal - so glad they were kicked out immediately.

I had a neighbor who would play loud music. This one day, I had come home sick with the flu. I laid down on the couch when all of a sudden the music blared louder than usual and pictures on the wall shook. I went to his door and he was really scary looking. I asked if he could turn the music down, that I was home sick. He did, but loud music became a part of my life after that and I moved into a house.

The only real important about moving was the fact we got rid of a lot of stuff. Once the kids came around and started growing up we stopped moving our own stuff and hired a Van. The Van that took us from Kansas to Canada was interesting. I happened to be in the house when one of the men in the kitchen said , eeeewwwwewew she didn't wash this before she put it away, I walked into the kitchen and ask what he was talking about and he showed me my cast iron that had oil on the bottom, I laughed. I said you must not have one of those in your house...if you don't put cooking oil on the bottom after washing, it rusts....he was so surprised... I am overjoyed to find you here. I was south for a while this winter and didn't spend much time here. Now I'm painting for the stores so still not here often but now I see you are here, i will look for you when I get here... Welcome Home!

We bought a house in a very small town, our area is lovely and the majority of the people who live here are around our age - I remember seeing a lot of children walking to school when we moved here but now I think the number is down to 2. I am happy here. I grew up in the country with no neighbors and that was fine for me, a horse lived across the dirt road in a pasture and the farmer let me ride him. I loved it. I love it here too...

@PainsOnSlate I do not remember the story and congrats on 51 years of marriage. That is great. What is your secret? I have someone that causes me so much trouble that lives above me and he could care less when i tell him to keep the noise down. The couple that lived there before him were horrible too. The landlords are not any better and do not care to please me because all they want is money and I am the only one that hears him and feels what you does. For me calling the police is not the answer because they just interrogate me and do not come. I am the only one that the ones above me now like to bother. I am glad you could buy your own home. I cannot afford to so rent and it is not better anywhere else. I have here what I have wanted and I am not going to let nasty people push me out.

We didn't call the police, the man in charge of the buildings is the one my husband walked to his office and brought him to see for himself. They were removed but the police was called by the man in charge before he even talked to them...they had their motorcycle in the house and running it just to be mean to us because we asked them to keep their music down. My husband and I met at college, we fell in love and moved on our own lives for a few years and married several years after we fell in love. Life is good.

The best part of that story was the fact the noise stopped as soon as the police arrived and removed them from the apartment and told them not to ever show up at this place again. We did move on to rental homes, and did that for years. Now we live in our own home...

@PainsOnSlate wow I'm sorry you had to deal with those people but so glad they were kicked out and never to return! That would have given me so much anxiety if I was to listen to all that arguing and loud sounds. And how so immature of them to become louder just to annoy you! I don't understand how people can be so disrespectful and stupid like that! Thank you for the mention. I really enjoyed your post too.
