Watermelon

Watermelon is one of my favorite treats during the summer. They are already out in grocery stores and at the various Farmer's Markets. One of the things I love about our Flea Market is that we have space in the front for various vendors to sell their extra produce. Last week someone brought in a basket full of watermelons. I couldn't resist, knowing that these watermelons were locally grown and at about 1/2 the price you would pay in the grocery store. I picked one out before leaving along with a bag of fresh grapes. We cut the watermelon over the weekend and it was pretty good. I think it would have been sweeter if left on the vine a few more days. However, it was as good or better than what you would get in the grocery store. And I didn't pay as much. I would rather my hard earned money go to a fellow Flea Market vendor than to the grocery store. Do you like watermelon? Do they grow in your area? Photo: Pixaby Public Domain

I also like watermelon, it is my second favorite fruit. My favorite fruit is pineapple. The watermelon is a common fruit here and there are more of them in summer.

I love fresh pineapple too. Watermelons grow here in the spring and summer months. They are a pretty common crop in the southern part of the U.S.

We can get watermelon all year round now which really has made it a bit less special. It's certainly a lovely fruit.

They do have them in grocery stores here and usually all cut up and ready to eat. However, you can expect to pay the same for that little small package as you would for a whole watermelon during the summer months.

We will be able to get fresh later in the year. I always buy then. Sometimes a huge box full when they go cheap at the auction.

We have roadside vendors with huge homegrown but they are now asking $15 each. It is just the two of us and we don't need one that big anyway. The one I got at the flea market was larger than basketball size and only $4. Deal :)

Yes, watermelons grow in our area. They're not my all-time favorite. I also like cantaloupe and honeydew.

I would rather support a farmer vs. a corporation/store. You know the fruit or vegetables are fresh and the price is much better. So you both win in that situation.
