Go Fly a Kite, or a Paper Airplane

Today the fifth grade class had something called an IDL. I do not know what those letters stand for. A person comes to the class with speakers and a camera and other electronic devices. She connects the classroom to a remote teacher and they do a project. I think it is usually a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math project. aka STEM. Today each student was given blank paper and watched and folded four different styles of paper airplanes. They have a data sheet and were to tell which they thought will be the best and why. Next week they will have an opportunity to fly them and see if their hypothesis was correct. I never got to fly paper airplanes at school. Now I am jealous.

Yes, and they learn scientific principles like lift, and drag, and so it gets in their brains in a subtle manner.

It is a lot of fun. You can even use scrap paper if you want.

I remember in grade school naughty boys getting into trouble for flying paper airplanes, especially in the classroom.

Next week they are going to test to see which planes are the best. I imagine they will use the hall.

They need a person to show them via a camera, how to make paper airplanes? I'm wrapping my head around that as the kids I went to school with already knew how, I didn't, still don't, and flew them at will across the classroom when the teacher was absent.

They made four different airplanes. The first was their own design. The other three were made to be like a science experiment. So about thirty kids all made the same kite for two three and four. Yes, there were some who had never made a paper plane before. You know, some kids only know about vidio games.

@GardenGerty That's the sad truth, so it was good they learned to make paper airplanes.

That must be what is called remote instruction or long-distance education. Here there are lots of old people who fly kite in spring.

I know there are some remote classes all the time in our small rural schools so that the students can get advanced classes. I think more older people here should fly kites.

Yes, but they have to take data on these, so it is now school work.

May be IDL stands for "Interactive Distance Learning", this is what looks like to me. Good luck flying your paper airplanes.

Back when I was in school (before STEM classes were around), we made our own kites. It was fun.

I think many schools did STEM type projects, but it was not called that, or formally directed. I have seen classes where they did lots of hands on things.
