For those who have been considering a ancestry DNA kit, it is currently $59.00 for America's Mother's Day. I am not sure if this promotion will reach the UK (or if they already had this promotion on their own Mother's Day), or if it will reach Canada either...
However, I know I've talked to a few here who have expressed interest in getting one done. I just happened to want to log into my ancestry account and saw this.
I know some are opposed to getting it done (too much controversy over security) but for those who do... Well there ya go.
Have you gotten one of these done?
As of the last update (which was awhile ago)
I am...
86% England, Wales and North Western Europe
12% Ireland and Scotland
1% Cameroon, Congo & Southern Bantu Peoples
1% Native American - North, Central, South
and
Less Than 1% Benin / Togo

I know there's been controversy over DNA kits period. There's not a reliable company in Europe?

@LadyDuck I will have to look at that later, I am headed out the door. I believe I heave heard people say that every test comes out differently. I'm sure the companies have some sort of an excuse as to why that is.

@ScribbledAdNauseum There is a reliable company and that costs a lot of money. By the way, read this article, the author took 9 different "Commercial DNA Tests" (in your country", they are all different.

Experts explained that the companies aren't really doing science, so it's not surprising that they produce different results.

It is so much fun to do and then to share the details! Were you surprised by any of your results?

No, not really. When I first did the test several years ago, I was surprised that Native American wasn't listed. Especially as my dad always said that he's grandfather was Cherokee.
I just saw that they have a "Health Traits" report you can order for $20.00, if you have already done the kit. I am thinking I might do that.

These are regularly on sale here, so anybody buying at the full price is foolish!

THey go on sale at major holidays here. I think St. Patrick's Day was the last time it went on sale. I got my kit for 89.99 a few years ago, it was a sale. Had I known it would go down this low, I would have waited.

You are a big mix, it seems.
I use to want to do one, but not spending that kind of money, or more, and dont know if i could trust it.

It took me a long time before I actually decided to spend the money and go for it. I know a lot of people don't think it's very trustworthy. I feel like it probably is about accurate for me.

I mean, it's a matter of interpretation. I think it's accurate.

@JustBhem There are also those who say that the test isn't accurate, that each dna company has a different way to "test" and how are we to know which one to trust. I used it to get a general idea of my ethnicities. I was able to find a long lost aunt

That's pretty interesting. Did you know you had any African blood before you did this test? If not, that must have been surprising. I was always hoping I had some Indian heritage, but highly doubtful, since none of my blood relatives even had brown eyes!

No, I had no idea. I think I'd read (or someone told me) that a lot of people have trace amounts of African blood in us. I wish that it still broke it down like it used to. I know that some of the North Western Europe percentage is German.
We have a lot of blue, green or hazel eyes in our family.
