The untold cost of the Paradise CA fire

I just spent an hour on the phone with my music buddy who lost his house in the Paradise fire. What he mostly spoke about was the effects of the fire on relationships, and on the mental health, of those who were affected by the fire. In his case, the fire has put a strain on his relationship with his girlfriend, and he's worried that the relationship might end. His girlfriend has been having PTSD flashbacks, and doesn't know what to do with herself since her business also burned down. My friend reports that many who have returned are struggling with depression and anxiety as they deal with finding new places to live, new jobs, insurance companies, etc. He's coming down this weekend for some jamming and a hockey game. I think I'm going to be doing lots of listening.

Very sorry for your friend, and probably listening is the best thing you can do. I know that one of the mylotters moved from Paradise to Arizona after the fire. At least they escaped with their lives. Things can be replaced.

@TheHorse Oh definitely..however, that might come in part from what they have lost, and not what they still have. However, just the intense fear is another matter.

@snowy22315 Yes, the fear must have been...and still be...terrible.

Things can be replaced. But relationships and mental health can still suffer.

A friend who I met here has moved to be with one of her children in New Mexico. She had been caregiver for her parents. Dad was in a nursing home, and has since passed. Her mom also recently passed. I am glad that her children have an extra apartment for her to be in. She misses so much about Paradise. I am glad you are there for your friend. It is too bad his girlfriend does not seem to have the support she needs, like the help you provide for your friend.

I remember being friends here with a woman from Paradise. Did she disappear from the MyLot radar screen? I'm pretty sure I told her I had friends up there. Tell her "hi" from me.

It doesn't. And we have to be sensitive to it.

You are what he needs, an ear and understanding. Dealing with the insurance company is the hardest ever, but not having a job/income has to be the worst.

@andriaperry I think/hope so, though he's sounding pretty dark about whether the relationship can survive. Last time he visited, he did leave feeling refreshed.

He's a traveling nurse, so he's still working. But his girlfriend doesn't know what to do with herself. And they're living in the tiny guest house that survived the fire, so they can't get "space" from each other.

I think you will be too--that is a lot to deal with--I can't imagine losing everything and having the flashbacks as well--We brought in a rescued dog from the Carr fire in September. He must have been on his own for a while. He needed surgery on both back legs abut is doing fine now--shortly after we got him, an ambulance pulled up in front of the house for one of our neighbors, our dog curled up into a ball and started whimpering at the siren and lights--I know this doesn't compare in some ways, but it does in others I think

@TheHorse We don't know. Logan was picked up without any identifying information. They tried placing him in an animal shelter near the fire in hopes that he would be claimed, but no one ever got him. He was transferred down here to the Bay Area and we adopted him in September---

I am so sorry that her girlfriend is suffering of PTSD flashbacks. When there is a major problem in life it's hard to get back on your feet and start back, I know very well.

They stayed with friends, then returned to their burnt out property. I believe Pacific Gas & Electric was not diligent in maintenance of their power lines.

Wow, these are the issues that do not make the evening news. I am so sorry for your friends. PTSD can be very difficult to deal with. I hope they can all find their own way through all of the devastation and loss. Listening is great! He is lucky to have you as a friend.

The insurance companies, the utility company blamed for starting the fire, and all the other people who are more interested in money than anything else also don’t think of those things. And, truth be told, they don’t care. If these people move, give up, or die that’s just one less claim they have to deal with. Criminal. Sometimes people (and I’ve been guilty of this myself) wonder why people are asked to donate to people who deal with large-scale disasters like this or Hurricane Michael from last year. Well, go to the area and you’ll see a wasteland where people — PEOPLE!!!!! — used to live, and you’ll see why. The insurance companies want to hem and haw as much as possible for as long as possible, while the victims just want to resume some sense of normalcy. Thanks for listening.
