Young dreams

My neighbor inherited a white horse when he and his wife bought the place. I've mentioned the neglected old mare. Pretty Arab. The lady that I've befriended, the one that I pay to watch our animals and place when we go places, well, she has a daughter who is almost thirteen. Girls often love horses. Of course she trotted over to the neighbor horse while her Mom did chores at our house. Of course she talked her Mom into buying a pink halter for the mare. I provided a thick lead rope. Every so often the girl drops the hint: going to get a hackamore and ride that horse. Uh huh. No and no. That is a big horse and its not like in the movies. Bones break and joints can be maimed for life. And no one has a saddle and have you ridden before? No. Do we know the horse is broke to ride? That it does not buck? That it knows whoa?? We'll see what happens next.

I hope she tries to get to know the horse instead @sallypup at least that would make the old horse somewhat happy.

@andriaperry I hear you. Not sure she heard me when I told her about a lady that I know who has a severe broken arm due to a freak horse accident.

most arabians 're more high-spirited'n require'n 'xperienced rider. this'un 'tis been neglected so long such'd be a true disaster. not only that, she needs more'n a saddle 'n bridle - she needs a helmet 'n someone to work with the horse 1st. that bein' said, more 'mportantly nothin' should'a been purchased without consent 'f the owner.

@crazyhorseladycx I totally agree with you all the way. The horse was dumped on the neighbor folks. The neighbors know zero about horses. They did not know what a halter is when I told them they need one- once they tried to get the horse into their front yard to eat grass by only putting a rope around her neck. You are right about the helmet. So the neighbors will just notice that the horse is being messed with and do nothing cause that is their way of doing things. Don't get me started on how they treat their other animals. (They do feed the horse hay.)

@crazyhorseladycx I have a weird relationship with those folks. We share our well with them otherwise I would not speak at all with them. I have no respect for them at all. They act so indifferent to things though they have geese and unfixed cats. Their garbage strewn place and old cars- he is a mechanic-vehicle hoarder. Vomit stuff.

You reminded me of me when I was young and played with a horse that lived across from my house. I will write about it. I stood on a cut off tree in the pasture and the horse stood next to me so I could get on to it. Once I was on it - the horse took me to the barn....no bridal and bareback, I hung on and the farmer saw me do it and gave me permission to continue to ride Star as often as I wanted. I loved that horse, we became real friends...

@PainsOnSlate Your story brought to mind a book and little movie that I saw years ago. I'm glad it all worked out well for you.

@Janet357 For sure. A pony has hard hooves and can run fast.

She should read up on how to train the horse so she can ride it.

It seems to be a right of passage for preteens and young teens to fall in love with horses. I see some very real questions and concerns about her trying to ride this horse. I do hope there is someone close to her to be the voice of reason.

Riding a horse is risky.
