Can you do Lucky Dips at a garage sale?

I am wanting to have a garage sale soon to get rid of things and hopefully make some extra cash. I don't know if I will do this for sure as it's just a thought but are you allowed to have a Lucky Dip at a garage sale? For anyone reading this who doesn't know what a Lucky Dip is, it's where you wrap up items, place them in a box, then people pick one or more out ( and in this case paying a couple dollars first ) to then be surprised ( or disappointed ) with what they got. I know you aren't allowed to do raffles or anything like that as you need a licence to do that sort of thing. But I don't know if Lucky Dips are allowed.

Oh Lucky Dips! That looks a good idea! No one does it here, but probably that's a good idea to get some customers!

@VivaLaDani13 You're welcome! You should go with it, but does it affect your income or not?

@tech40 Nah it won't affect anything. Thank goodness. I'm hoping to make a lot of money on this garage sale. Really in need of money so hoping not to spend any money on the garage sale.

I read this cause I had never heard of Lucky Dips. I'm not sure we have a word for it and I just don't know it. I'm not sure if it would be allowed, it seems like it would be alright but you should check with your village or town hall. I'm sure they could tell you. I know in our town you can only have them certain times of the summer.

I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be allowed. I would assume that you can't do raffles because of gambling laws. I wouldn't have thought there'd be a problem with a lucky dip, though.

@pumpkinjam Thank you for your answer. It's why I'm confused about it because I know it's not gambling but I don't know if Lucky Dip is considered a friendly game or a little bit like gambling because you are gambling your money away for something unknown. So I'm not so sure. Something I'm still considering either way.

@VivaLaDani13 the way I see it is the difference between raffle and lucky dip - raffle = gambling because you pay for entry with no guarantee of a prize; lucky dip - you are paying for goods, you are buying something (as opposed to potentially winning or potentially losing money) even if you don't know what it is. You could do what some companies do with end-of-line goods, depending what you have, of course. That is to put a certain type of item into the lucky dip - such as if you have lots of jewellery or lots of children's clothes of a certain size - then you pack one or more items together, detailing the type. Like Avon has the lucky dip makeup bag or jewellery bag. You know that you're getting, say, one lipstick, one eyeshadow, and one piece of jewellery but the actual content is a surprise.

@pumpkinjam ok you are right! You made me view it much more differently and clearer now thank you!!!! Thank you so very much for the advice and tips! I love them! See how I go. I will be posting about it when I have the garage sale. I'm excited to have it but really hoping to get rid of a lot and make some good money.

Those are called mystery bags or boxes here. The fun is gambling on what you may get.

@JohnRoberts That's why I'm not sure if it's allowed because it is gambling in a small way. Paying for something without knowing the outcome til it's opened. Not sure.

@Aansh13 I'm not sure how popular they are. I haven't really seen them in many many years. Would be cool for you to see one, one day.
