Reading: Do You Prefer Reading Traditional Books, On Tablet or Audio Books?

I think that most of you know by now that I love to read. I prefer reading a traditional book vs. reading on a tablet or cell phone. I have never gotten into audiobooks. To me, that isn't reading, but listening. I tried a couple of years ago to get used to reading on my phone and my tablet. The problem with that was that I would forget to go back and read more or finish what I was reading. I did use this method for a while when waiting for doctor appointments but it did not impress me enough to give up my traditional books. What method do you prefer for reading? Traditional books? Tablet/Cell? Or Audio? Photo: Pixaby, public domain

I like a book that I can see, touch and smell.

Oh yes. I wonder if our preferences have to do with what we were brought up with?

@kareng I'm sure they do. I love libraries...of course I worked in one during high school. Love the smell.

@LindaOHio I did to, or rather volunteer. Honor students have free hour to either have study hall or volunteer in some capacity in school. I always chose the library to work in.

Good for you. I am glad you use it. I forgot that I even had books downloaded on both cell phone and tablet.

@simone10 Go test it out. I downloaded free books from Amazon on my tablet and phone. If you have Prime, you should have a good selection to choose from. I tried but regular books won for me.

I prefer traditional books. I have read a few ebooks, but I only read the ebook version if I can't get a traditional book. I listened to a lot of audio books when I was younger, but I don't use them today.

That's a good way to do it. I can see where audiobooks are good for elderly and sick people. I wasn't trying to take away from those at all.

@Porcospino You are right, audio is better than nothing.

I prefer traditional books, myself. I want something that I can turn the pages of.

gimme a real book any ol' day. i despise the other methods i fear. can't concentrate'n those audio thingies, can't 'feel' the words'n a tablet. there's somethin' 'bout the scent 'f a book, the turnin' 'f the pages that keeps me 'ntrigued.

My sentiments exactly. And it is hard to give up a method you have used all your life.

@kareng i reckon that part'd be true, though my sweet momma 'tis quite 'ddicted to her reader 'n she'll not touch a puter, lol. jest feels so wrong?? that'n that crick'n the neck aint much fun neither. 'tis handy fer folks though, not havin' the need to haul bags 'f books back'n forth to the library :)

I do both....Kindle and real books. I prefer real books but they started taking up so much room on my shelves that I started downloading books on my Kindle. Now I have a hundred or more books downloaded so it's easy storage. Plus I found that I can adjust the font as my eyesight is getting bad.

I am so used to the "old way" that I forgot I had books downloaded on my tablet. I guess I'm set in my ways.

@kareng I don't think the "old way" will ever go out of style. There's just something about a real book

That is another problem, the eye strain from the light on phone/tablets. I think I will stick with traditional books here.

I agree. I've always loved books so too hard to give them up at this stage of the game.

I don't think that will ever change for me either. I tried reading books on my tablet and it just didn't last. No excitement there.

I have downloaded oodles of free books on my tablet and also on the phone but I doubt I'll read any of them unless totally bored or in a waiting room somewhere.

I realize all forms of books, audiobooks are great when I’m going for a walk though or cleaning around the house!

That's interesting. I think that most of the older folks are the ones set on real books because perhaps that is what we grew up with? Just a thought...

@kareng kindles didn’t come around until I was in my thirties lol and believe me I love physical books but when I’m out and about I generally have several books I’m working on and with a back issue a tablet or my phone is just more practical and less painful!

@Michellekidwell I get that. I have some stored or downloaded on my phone and tablet but I don't ever open anything there to read anymore. I would rather bring my book in my purse and problem solved.
