Police Dogs

When I was walking yesterday I stumbled upon a canine unit training their dogs. There were signs on the cars saying not to approach the cars due to dangerous dogs. I stood back and watched the dogs going through their paces. I've read about the canine units and it was interesting to see them working out. One of the policemen saw I was interested and motioned for me to come on over. He told me to stay back and brought the dog on a leash to where I was standing The dog did everything the officer ordered. It was an amazing show. I thanked him for allowing me to watch and went on my way. These dogs are intelligent and highly trained. They save many lives. The dogs belong to their trainers and when the dog retires they stay with the officer.

They do the same here, the dog stay with the officer, I think it's a good thing, because they become the best friends.

I'm sure they do. They can bring a man down in seconds. I wouldn't move if one got near me without an officer.

I see the training stuff on TV but have never seen these dogs in action in real life. How neat you got to witness them - they are indeed intelligent and brave!

@RubyHawk seen a few shows with police dog display teams - always impressive. I'd hate to have one chasing me when I'm trying to run with a safe or bag of gold bullion, lol

These dogs were strong and quick at every command. The pit bull was little more than a pup but others looked full grown.

Thank goodness those dogs will remain with their trainers, dogs are very family oriented and when they bond with a person that person becomes their family.

That's true. One looked kind of like a collie and another was a pit bull.

what a treat fer ya, ms. ruby! they're fascinatin' 'n 'tis 'mazin' what all thingies pups'll do 't times jest with hand motions. 'round these parts they 'nly keep the retired pup if'n they chose to get outta police pup handlin', statin' they can't 've the 2 's such causes confusion fer the new pup. many're 'dopted out, most oft to friends.

That's great you were able to watch them train. It's a good benefit for the trainer and dog when the officer retires.
