The idea used by you is good! Normally i d thevsame thing to assess the wounds lesions etc which are seen at odd places as this methd helps us t have a clear picture!
But unfrtunately in your case, it seems the nature is also also playing its role against you with its camouflage color effect!

Going by the color of the cat it is a girl. Boy calicos are extremely rare and I see yellow and dark spots on the white making it a calico.

This cat is a three colored cat. Almost always they are female. Yes, it is hard to tell with the patches of color. In the really rare occasion that a three colored--we call them calico--cat is a male it is usually sterile. The color pattern is genetically linked.

@allknowing No, there is no other way, check under the tail. When they are very young it's not always easy to see the difference.

I do not think I touched any of the cats that I fed where I used to live. Just one used to walk me to my building and leave. He was very sweet.

@allknowing Male cats usually walk with their foot upright but for girls cats cross between left and right foot.
